Military career

John Akehurst, who was educated at Cranbrook School and the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, was among the first members of the Northamptonshire Regiment in 1949. During the Malayan Emergency in 1952, he was seconded to the Malay Regiment. In 1968, he was appointed Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment.

He commanded the Dhofar Brigade of the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces in 1974 against a communist-inspired armed revolt during the Dhofar Rebellion. In the fall of 1975, it reached a peak, when he successfully launched an assault from Sarfait's mountain garrison, but guerrillas struck it on the border for the first time.

From 1976 to 1978, he served as Deputy Military Secretary and then General Officer Commanding the 4th Armoured Division in 1979. He was appointed Commandant of the Staff College in Camberley in 1982, and in 1984, he became the Commander of the UK Field Army. His last assignment was as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe in 1987; he resigned in 1990.
