Jofra Chioke Archer (born 1 April 1995) is a Barbadian-born English cricketer who plays both for England and for Sussex County Cricket Club in England.
Archer was chosen to play for the England cricket team in April 2019 after being limited to fixtures against Ireland and Pakistan.
He made his international debut for England in May 2019 and was part of the England squad that defeated the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
In the 2019 Ashes series, he made his Test debut against Australia later this summer.
Early life
Jofra Chioke Archer was born in Barbados on 1 April 1995. Frank Archer, his father, is English, and Joelle Waithe is Barbadian. He was granted British citizenship through his father. He went to England in 2015 and was hoping to play for England until 2022. As he did not live in England until after his 18th birthday, he had to complete a seven-year residency test, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). In 2014, the archer played for West Indies Under-19s three times, but he had already stated his intention to return to England when his residence term was complete. However, the ECB reported a change to its regulations in November 2018, lowering the eligibility period from seven years to three to bring it into compliance with ICC rules.
Domestic and franchise career
Archer made his first-class debut for Sussex during Pakistan's tour of England in July 2016, and his List A debut against Gloucestershire later this month in the 2016 Royal London One-Day Cup.
In the 2017 BPL season, the Khulna Titans acquired Archer. In both the 2017–18 and the 2018–19 Big Bash League seasons, Archer played for Hobart Hurricanes.
In the 2018 Pakistan Super League draft, he was signed by the Quetta Gladiators as a replacement for Carlos Brathwaite. He made his PSL debut against Karachi Kings and took 2 wickets. He appeared in two matches in total but was unable to participate in the remaining tournament due to a side strain.
In the 2018 IPL auction, the Rajasthan Royals bought him for £800,000. Archer made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut against the Mumbai Indians on April 22, 2018, taking three wickets and being named player of the match.

International career
Archer was selected in England's squads for the limited overs series against Pakistan and the one-off One Day International (ODI) against Ireland in April 2019. On May 3, 2019, he made his ODI debut for England against Ireland against Ireland. On May 5, 2019, he made his Twenty20 International debut for England against Pakistan.
Archer was not included in England's preliminary squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Andrew Flintoff, a former England cricketer, said he'd eliminate "anyone" from the squad to include Archer. England selected their squad for the World Cup on May 21, 2019, with Archer named in the final fifteen-man squad. He appeared in all England's matches, with Archer bowling the super over the match against New Zealand in the final. Following the World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named Archer as the squad's rising star. Archer was also included in the ICC's CWC2019 Team of the Tournament, praising his new ball bowling and bowling at the death of the cricketers.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) named Archer in England's fourteen-man Test squad for the first match of the 2019 Ashes series in July. However, he was dropped from England's final eleven for the match after recovering from an injury. Archer was recalled in the twelve-man squad for the second Ashes Test and made his Test debut in the match. He dismissed Australia's opener Cameron Bancroft for his first wicket in Test cricket. Archer's first five-wicket haul in Test cricket ended on the first day of the third Test, with Australia dismissing him for 179 runs. Following the conclusion of the Ashes, Archer was granted his first central contract by the ECB. Archer was named one of the year's top five Wisden Cricketers in April 2020.
Archer was included in England's 30-man squad to begin training against the West Indies in 2020, and he was part of the England squad for the first Test match of the season. However, Archer was suspended from England's squad for the match on the morning of the second Test because he had breached biosecurity legislation. As a result, he was held in silence for five days, fined, and given a written warning by the ECB. He returned to the team for the third Test and two of the three Tests against Pakistan.
Archer underwent two operations for an elbow injury in May and December 2021, effectively putting him out of the international team for a year. Archer was barred from participating in the 2022 English summer due to a back strain fracture in May 2022.
