Joey Castillo Career

Musical career

Castillo, a native of Gardena, California, started playing drums at the age of 15, when his grandmother loaned him the funds to buy a drum kit. War, Al Green, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and the Black Flag have all influenced his playing. He began his drumming career by joining the Los Angeles punk band Wasted Youth in 1984. After two albums and several tours, he left Wasted Youth and joined Sugartooth in 1991. Chronic Halitosis, a short-lived punk rock band, formed during the summer of 1994. They did punk covers of bands like Misfits and Black Flag.

Castillo left Sugartooth and joined Danzig in 1994, having turned down previous offers from Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies. Chuck Biscuit's drum tech was there from 1990-93 and later replaced him as a live drummer on the '94 tours following Danzig's release of Danzig 4. He was (with an exception for Glenn) the only remaining Danzig member for almost ten years, specializing in percussion duties on Blackacidevil (1996) and I Luciferi (2002). He appeared on Robert Trujillo's solo album in 1996, and in 1998, he joined Zilch. After his departure in 2001, Goatsnake's original drummer was replaced, but the pair had to return soon after. Castillo auditioned for Guns N' Roses in 1997, but did not join the band. He performed backing vocals and drums for several tracks on Son of Sam's album Songs From The Earth in 2001.

Castillo appeared without an audition, performing half a song (Avon), and at a last-minute rehearsal when frontman Josh Homme allegedly walked out of the room and announced, "I just fired the drummer." Castillo's return to the gig, where he lived for ten years, will begin tomorrow. Castillo has appeared on stage plays, including Mark Lanegan's solo album Bubblegum, Desert Sessions Vol. i'm 9 & 10 and Eagles of Death Metal's second and third albums Death by Sexy (2006) & Heart On (2008), the latter's second and third albums, as well as the latter's.

Castillo's involvement as a session player, tour guide, as well as becoming a full band member in several projects has grown since leaving QotSA in 2012.

Castillo, Trent Reznor, Mariqueen Maandig Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Alessandro Cortini appeared as "The Nine Inch Nails" in Episode 8 of Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime, performing an alternate live version of the song "She's Gone Away" on Nine Inch Nails' 2016 album "Not the Actual Events" on June 25, 2017.

Joey joined The Bronx in 2018, after founding member Jorma Vik left to play with Castillo's former band Eagles of Death Metal. In the following year, he appeared in a session with The Hives for the second year.

Castillo, the hardcore punk band from childhood, has revealed that he would be their new drummer and that he would accompany them on their reunion tour to commemorate their 1980 album, Group Sex. The tour was initially scheduled for 2020 and planned for 2020, but it was postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
