Matip was pulled out of the match against Manchester United on January 15, 2017, owing to the Cameroon Football Federation's failure to announce that Matip will therefore play club football during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Overall, Matip was considered a key player in Liverpool's defense, despite heavy backlash prior to the season.

Matip was chastised for his poor result against Newcastle United on October 1st, who was deemed at fault for Newcastle's goal. In a 4–1 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium on November 4th, Matip scored his first goal of the 2017-18 season. Matip, a young teenager, began playing international football for Cameroon after meeting up with the national team ahead of a friendly against Italy on March 3, 2010. He made his first appearance in the match against Italy and went on to participate in the 2010 FIFA World Cup for Cameroon. He was also a member of the Cameroon squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he played twice and scored against Brazil, the team's only goal of the tournament.

Matip was selected for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in January 2017, but the call-up was turned down. Matip resigned from the national team when he was still at Schalke, according to a letter sent by the Cameroonian Football Association, but the organization did not follow FIFA instructions by not informing the Cameroonian Football Association. Although FIFA had sorted out the rumors, Matip could not play for Liverpool. He later missed a Premier League match against Manchester United and an FA Cup third round match against Plymouth Argyle.

Matip cited his motivation for his departure as his unhappiness with the national team's establishment and his inexperience with the coaching staff as the reason for his departure.

The new rule is set to be brought in next season, but will not be ready for the start of the campaign.  It will impact how offside calls are made moving forward in England's top division, and will come into effect after one of the international breaks, meaning it will be introduced as early as September or as late as November.

A Luis Diaz goal was incorrectly ruled out by on-pitch officials for offside, but VAR then failed to correct it after believing the decision had been to award a goal. VAR officials at Stockley Park said the check was 'complete' and play continued wrongly with a Spurs free-kick. The PGMOL later apologised for a 'significant human error'. Liverpool went on to lose the match in London 2-1 after a 96th-minute Joel Matip own goal.
