Joel Bolomboy Career

Early life and college career

Bolomboy was born in Donetsk, Ukraine, to a Congolese father and a Russian mother of Tatar origins. When Bolomboy was less than three years old, the family moved to Fort Worth, Texas. He told the Standard-Examiner that he did not "remember anything" about Ukraine and felt he had "never been there" while in college.

Despite competition from larger colleges such as Clemson, Auburn, and Florida State, he attended high school at Keller Central High School in Fort Worth and chose Weber State for college. Bolomboy made history by becoming the all-time leading rebounder in Weber State and Big Sky Conference history during his time as an undergraduate.

Bolomboy, who was always a good rebounder, boosted his scoring average in the 2015–16 season, averaging 17.9 points per game and 12.8 rebounds per game. Following the season, Bolomboy was named first-team All-Big Sky Conference, as well as league Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

Professional career

Bolomboy was selected by the Utah Jazz as the 52nd pick in the 2016 NBA draft on June 23, 2016. He signed with the Jazz on August 19, 2016. In an 88–75 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, he made his NBA debut on October 30, 2016, scoring three points, one assist, one steal, and one block in four minutes off the bench. Bolomboy had various stints with the Salt Lake City Stars, Utah's D-League affiliate, during his rookie season. He averaged 16.5 points and 13.3 rebounds per game in 26 games with the Stars.

The Jazz waived Bolomboy on October 16, 2017.

Bolomboy, a Milwaukee Bucks affiliate, agreed to a two-way contract on October 20, 2017. He'll divide his playing time between the Bucks and their G League affiliate throughout his tenure. However, Bolomboy will be cut from the team on January 7, 2018, after converting Xavier Munford to a two-way contract of his own initiative.

Bolomboy re-signed with the Wisconsin Herd on January 10, 2018.

On August 8, 2018, Bolomboy was signed by CSKA Moscow of the VTB United League on a three-year contract. He signed a two-year contract with the club on March 2, 2020.

Bolomboy left CSKA Moscow on February 28, 2022, for personal reasons relating to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Bolomboy signed a one-year contract with Olympiacos of the Greek Basket League and Euroleague on July 6, 2022.

International career

In the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2014, Bolomboy was encouraged to try out for the Ukraine national basketball team. He was injured while training for the tournament and was unable to participate in any games. He was named to the Ukrainian team's preliminary roster ahead of EuroBasket 2017, but he did not appear on the final roster.

Bolomboy became a Russian citizen in November 2018. During the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers and the EuroBasket 2022 qualifiers, Bolomboy appeared for the Russian national basketball team. Due to injury, he missed the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
