Joel Adams Life

Joel Adams (February 4, 1750 – July 9, 1830) was a prolific planter and soldier from lower Richland County, South Carolina.

Adams was a leader of South Carolina Militia forces during the American Revolution and served in the Continental Army.

Adams married Grace Weston, William Weston's daughter, and the pair had seven children together. Adams was instrumental in the agricultural development of central South Carolina in the 18th century and was instrumental in the state's political system, which was centered in Columbia, South Carolina at the time.

He was a vocal proponent of education, as well as military and political service to state and country, and served in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Joel Adams II (1784–1859) and William Weston Adams (1786–1831) both graduated from Yale University and served in the South Carolina House of Representatives.

James Hopkins Adams, his grandfather, graduated from Yale University and was the 66th governor of South Carolina from 1854 to 1857.

James Uriah Adams (1812–1871), his grandson, was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and a Yale University graduate.

James Pickett Adams (1828-1904), grandson of Joel Pickett Adams (1828–1904) was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and Major in the Confederate States Army, and was Major in the Confederate States Army.

In the film The Last Confederate: Robert Adams II, his grandson was a soldier in the Confederate Army, and his life was portrayed in the film The Story of Robert Adams. Warren Adams (1838-1884), Joel's great grandson, served in the Confederate Army and was in charge of the First South Carolina Infantry Regiment at Battery Wagner.

Warren graduated from The Citadel in 1859, where he was the Commandant of the Corps of Cadets. Henry Walker Adams (1852-1903), son of James Uriah Adams, served in The South Carolina House of Representatives. Dr. John Grisby, a South Carolina author and surgeon, is a South Carolina writer and scientist.

Edward Clarkson Leverett Adams (1876–1946), Joel's double great-grandson, was a member of The South Carolina House of Representatives and was a member of The South Carolina House of Representatives.

E.C.L. Adams was Joel Adams II and James Adams, two of Joel Adams' sons, and was the grandson of Joel Adams II and James Adams.

Tales of the Congaree was his author of a number of books, including Tales of the Congaree.

Langston Hughes, the African American author and Harlem Renaissance king, visited E.C.L. Adams said of Adams that he was "exactly my image of what a genuine Southern gentleman should be." Weston Adams, his ancestor, served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and was also a United States Ambassador. Joel Adams is buried at the Congaree Episcopal Church in Congaree, South Carolina.
