High school career
Staley received two letters in football and two others in track when attending Rockford High School (Rockford, Michigan). He was selected to be a member of Grand Rapids Press Dream Team. He caught 24 passes for 559 yards and seven touchdowns as a prep senior during his high school career. Staley was ranked No. 1 in the United Kingdom. Staley was also a top track and field athlete for the Rockford High School track team. He set three school records during this period. College career
Staley was given a scholarship to attend Central Michigan University, where he competed for the Central Michigan Chippewas football team from 2003 to 2006. Staley's career came to an abrupt end. He boosted his 6' 5" frame without losing footspeed. He appeared in 11 games as a true freshman, receiving 11 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown, and a touchdown against Eastern Michigan University. During his sophomore season, Staley was moved to the offensive line due to his size. He appeared in all 11 games at right tackle.
He started all 11 games at left tackle and didn't allow a single single play. He had 53 knockdown blocks and was part of a defensive line that helped CMU's average of 418.8 yards per game. Kent Smith, the CMU's single-season total yardage record holder, was also blocked for CMU's single-season total yardage record holder. Staley paved the way for true freshman Ontario Sneed to run for 1,065 yards and earn Freshman All-America recognitions.

Professional career
In the 2007 NFL Draft, Staley was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round, 28th overall. Since the Patriots traded into the first round with Jerod Mayo and a 2007 fourth-round pick (which was later traded to the Oakland Raiders for wide receiver Randy Moss), the pick was drafted.
On August 28, 2007, he was named the starting right tackle over Kwame Harris. He made the season with 16 starts and eight sacks.
Staley was shifted to left tackle starting every game, allowing only 8.5 sacks in the 2008 NFL season.
Staley's contract with the 49ers has been in place for six years going into the 2017 season. He missed seven games of the season due to a strained knee, but he managed to start all of the other nine games with only three sacks and no penalties against him.
In the 49ers' 20-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns, he earned a pass from a tackle eligible group for a crucial first down.
