Joe Santos (born Joseph John Minieri Jr.; June 9, 1931 – March 18, 2016) was an Italian-American film and television actor best known as Sgt.

On the NBC crime drama, Dennis Becker (later Lieutenant) the friend of James Garner's character, The Rockford Files.

Early years

Santos was born in Brooklyn on June 9, 1931, the same day his father died. Rose (née Sarno) served olive oil and became a nightclub owner and singer in New York City and Havana. Daniel Santos, a Puerto Rican immigrant, was married later in life, and Joe took his name.

Santos was a football player at Fordham University and then became a semi-pro before deciding on a new path in acting. He struggled in show business and served blue-collar jobs before his friend Al Pacino helped him get a role in the 1971 film The Panic in Needle Park.

Santos served in the US Army during the Korean War.

Personal life

While in Cuba in 1958, Santos met and married Maria Montero. They were married for 30 years before her death in 1988.

Career

Santos appeared in a number of notable films of the early 1970s, including The Panic in Needle Park (1971) and The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight (1971), as the leader of a slave-catching crew in the western The Legend of Ngr Charley (1972). Shaft's Big Score. (1972), who served as a policeman in Shamus (1973), Eddie Coyle (1973), Blade (1973), and Zandy's Bride (1974). He appeared in The Postman, a big budget Kevin Costner flop, more than two decades later.

Santos appeared in The Rockford Files from 1974 to 1980, as the friend of the easy-going, often flippant ex-convict-turned-private investigator Jim Rockford. In the TV series Hardcastle and McCormick (1985–86), Lt. Frank Harper portrayed him. In eight Dennis Becker television films (1994-1999), he reprised his Dennis Becker role (1994-1999).

Santos appeared in several television movies during the 1970s and 1980s, including Nightside (1973), The Wolf on the Dead (1974), The Hustler of Muscle Beach (1980), and The Ratings Game (1984). His appearance was often that of a police detective or lieutenant. In the four-part 1992 television miniseries Sinatra, Marty Sinatra, Frank's father, was portrayed.

Santos appeared in the short-lived (10 episodes) NBC comedy Me and Maxx in 1980. 675 On the ABC comedy a.k.a. Domingo Rivera portrayed him in 1984. Pablo, which was cancelled after six episodes, was cancelled.

Throughout his career, Santos appeared on television shows, including Room 222, Toma, Barnaby Jones, The Streets of San Francisco, Kung Fu, Baretta, Lou Grant, Police Story (in 8 episodes), Black Sheep Squadron, Trapper John, M.D. Magnum P.I. The Greatest American Hero, Hill Street Blues, III. (in three episodes) The A-Team, Remington Steele, T. J. Hooker, Hardcastle, and McCormick (in ten episodes) The A-Team, Remington Steele, T. He appeared on the CBS game show Match Game from 1978 to 1980, always in the top left seat. He appeared in numerous episodes and was often a comedic foil to Brett Somers.
