He was also a producer on fantasy Willow and a production designer on two mid-80s TV films starring the Ewoks seen in Return of the Jedi.

Johnston had intended to command Hulk but he was forced to withdraw in July 1997. Johnston converted from effects-driven action films to the more personal October Sky (1999), starring a teenager Jake Gyllenhaal of West Virginia high school who wants to be a rocket scientist for NASA against his father's wishes.
The sequel Jurassic Park III, Johnston's first project of the 2000s, cost the box office over US$300 million. Viggo Mortensen appeared in Johnston's western Hidalgo. Johnston took a six-year creative break before deciding on the 2010 revival of 1941 horror classic The Wolfman on a month's notice. Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins appeared in the film shot in England.
