Club career

Plata began his career in Barcelona's youth before joining the Alfaro Moreno Academia in Guayaquil in 2009. He joined the LDU Quito's youth team after impressing at Alfaro Moreno.

Plata impressed Liga coach Edgardo Bauza and was promoted to the senior team during the 2010 Serie A season's second stage. Plata won by 1–0 over Olmedo on August 22, 2010 – his first professional appearance for LDU Quito at Estadio Casa Blanca. His debut was regarded as a success, and Plata became a fixture for the remainder of the season.

In a 1–0 victory over ESPOLI on September 18, 2010, Plata scored his first professional goal. Liga's most important goal aided them in securing their position at the top of the table. Plata ended the season on Sunday, appearing in seven league games (starting 5) and scoring one goal as Liga claimed the Second Stage of the 2010 Serie A, defeating Emelec for the 10th time in the club's history.

Plata was loaned to Major League Soccer after the 2010 season ended in order to continue his growth, and Toronto FC selected him with the No. 10 for his No. 58. In the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, the 49 pick was a 49 pick. On March 24, 2011, Toronto FC formally joined Plata. In a 1–1 home draw against Chivas USA on April 2 Plata made his Toronto debut as a second half sub for Alen Stevanovi. In a 3–0 away victory over FC Edmonton in the first leg of the Canadian Championship on April 27, Plata made his first appearance for Toronto and contributed two assists. Plata made the starting line-up and gave Toronto a 4–0 aggregate victory over FC Edmonton on May 4 for the second leg, as well as receiving Man of the Match accolades in a 1–0 home win. In a 2–1 victory over Houston Dynamo, Plata scored his first MLS goal and then went on to set up his second for Maicon Santos, earning him the MLS player of the week award. Plata scored a crucial goal against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on July 2 to seal Toronto's third straight Canadian Championship and guaranteeing the team a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League. Plata was named as the tournament's best player on the George Gross Memorial Trophy.

Plata made his Champions League debut against Real Esteli F.C. on July 27. In the 49th minute, Gianluca Zavarise led his team to a 2–1 home victory, scoring both goals. Plata's success continued in the champions league scoring two goals in a pivotal match against FC Dallas on October 18 in the final group stage match, with a 3–0 away win advancing Toronto to its first ever quarter final appearance.

The club announced a multi-year contract to keep Plata at Toronto FC in January 11, 2012; as per club policy and league, the new contract terms were not disclosed, but estimates indicate a $500,000 fee was paid to keep him. Plata scored his first goal of the season on April 4 against Santos Laguna, Plata's second leg of the 2011–12 CONCACAF Champions League semifinals, despite losing 6–2 away.

On July 11, 2012, Plata returned to LDU Quito on a six-month loan from Toronto.

Plata re-joined Toronto in January 2013, at the time of the loan. On January 30, 2013, he was traded to Real Salt Lake in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

Plata scored his first goal for Real Salt Lake against Chivas USA on May 20, 2013.

He scored a career high 13 goals in 2014, while adding six assists, bringing the Twitter hashtag #PlataEsOro to prominence, a play on Plata's name, meaning "silver" and "oro" meaning "gold."

He re-signed with RSL as a Young Designated Player in 2015 as a Young Designerated Player. He renewed his deal in 2017, this time as a Designated Player, after the age of being a Young DP passed. In the second tier USL Championship, he participated with RSL's B team, Real Monarchs, in a 4-1 victory over Reno 1868.

Real Salt Lake's contract option was suspended after a disappointing season in which he scored one goal, against the Colorado Rapids on a 95th-minute penalty kick, his first MLS goal in 364 days.

Plata would join Liga MX Toluca for the 2020-2021 season, according to the department's announcement on July 6, 2020. On January 24, 2021, he scored his first goal for the club against Necaxa. In the summer of 2021, his employment was ended.

He joined Ecuadorian Serie A team Delfn on January 28, 2022.

International career

Plata was a member of Ecuador's Under-20 national team. Plata's first senior call-up to the national team and his debut against Canada on June 1, 2011, at his club team, Toronto FC's home field, BMO Field. In the game against El Salvador Plata, Plata was called up for friendlies against the United States and El Salvador. In the game against El Salvador Plata, two goals were scored in a 5–1 victory over El Salvador.
