Life and career
Joo César Monteiro was born into a family with anti-clerical and anti-fascist ideals. Monteiro's family migrated to Lisbon when he was 15 years old to encourage him to continue his studies. Monteiro went to Great Britain in 1963 to study at the London Film School (also known as the London School of Film Techniques). He began filmmaking in 1965 in Portugal, Quem Espera por Sapatos Barefoot (Who Waits for the Deceased's Shoes Dies Barefoot), but it would not be completed for five years due to financial difficulties. He made the short film "Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen" about the Portuguese poet at the same time. Monteiro has also written film reviews for periodicals such as Imagem, Diário de Lisboa, and O Século.
Fragmentos de um Filme Esmola (1972) was his first feature film. He created Silvestre, a traditional Portuguese folk tale. Silvestre was on display at the Venice Film Festival, marking a significant step in his foreign recognition. Flor do Mar (1986), starring Laura Morante, was on display at the Salsomaggiore Film Festival, where it received the Special Jury Prize. Monteiro debuted Joo de Deus as a performer at the Venice Film Festival in 1989 with Recordación da Casa Amarela (Silver Lion), a film that marked the introduction of the character Joo de Deus. He made O ltimo Mergulho, a filme starring Fabienne Babe, in 1992.
As Bodas de Deus (1999 Cannes Film Festival, 1995), Branca de Neve (Venice Film Festival, 2000) and Valiant Film Festival, 2003) were his last films. Branca de Neve (Snow White) was highly contested because a large portion of the film was black screen, but a densely composed audio track played throughout.
