Joanna Kulig (born 24 June 1982) is a Polish film, stage, and television actress as well as a performer.

Early life and education

Kulig was born in Krynica, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland, on June 24, 1982. Her mother worked as a cook at a local kindergarten, and her father, a folk poet, was a resident poet. She was raised in Muszynka with four siblings. Justyna Schneider, her younger sister, is also an actress and adopted their great-grandmother's surname to avoid confusion because their first names are similar.

Kulig graduated from the Frédéric Chopin First Degree State Music School, where she studied piano while living in Krynica. She went to Kraków and enrolled at the Mieczysz State Music School Complex, where she earned her diploma in singing at the age of 18. In the meantime, she completed the Kraków Vocational High School for Hotel Administration. Kulig obtained an acting degree with a specialization in singing from the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Kraków in 2007. She was the first in her family to graduate from a university.

Personal life

Kulig married Maciej Bochniak, a 2009 film director and screenwriter. In February 2019, she gave birth to their son.

Kulig performed "Mi cisz" in 1998 and won an episode of the Polish television talent show Szansa na sukces by performing Grzegorz Turnau's "Midzy cisz a cisz." She competed in the show's annual final and came third. Turnau's daughter was later invited to perform with him on his 2002 album Nawet. In 2002, Kulig appeared in season two of the Polish television talent show Idol. She was disqualified in the semi-finals.

Kulig appeared in the play A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Helena Modrzejewska National Stary Theater in Kraków on her debut in 2006. In Grzegorz Pacek's film on Wednesday morning, she made her film debut in 2007, earning her the Gdynia Film Festival award for Best Debut. In 2011, she appeared in Alicja alongside Juliette Binoche in Magorzata Szumowska's 2011 film Elles, earning her the Polish Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and another award at the Gdynia Film Festival for Best Supporting Actress. She appeared alongside Ethan Hawke and Kristin Scott Thomas in the 2011 drama The Woman in the Fifth directed by Pawe Pawlikowski. She appeared in Jacek Borcuch's drama Lasting and Pawlikowski's Academy Award-winning drama Ida in 2013. Kulig received her second award from the Polish Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress, both for her second year. Sister Irena appeared in Anne Fontaine's critically acclaimed drama The Innocents, which also appeared in Anne Fontaine's 2016 critically acclaimed thriller The Innocents.

Kulig's international breakthrough came in 2018 when she appeared in Pawlikowski's historical drama film Cold War, in which she plays Zula, a woman in postwar Poland who joins a folk music touring company. "She delivers a show-making performance of extraordinary breadth and depth," Mark Kermode of The Observer said, and San Francisco Chronicle's Mick LaSalle said, "She takes the role of a lifetime between her teeth, chomps on it, pounds it into the ground, and never lets go for a second." Kulig received the Best Actress Award at the 31st European Film Awards and the Best Actress Award from the Polish Academy for her performance. In Wojciech Smarzowski's controversial film Clergy, she played a local priest's mother with whom she becomes pregnant. Wprost, the Polish daily, ranked her fourth on its list of the 50 Most Influential Polish Women in 2019.

In Damien Chazelle's 2020 Netflix musical drama film The Eddy, Kulig starred as jazz singer Maja. She appeared at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival as one of the Uncertain Regard section jurors. Anne Hathaway, Tahar Rahim, Marisa Tomei, and Matthew Broderick are set to star in Rebecca Miller's romantic comedy She Came to Me.
