James Arthur Patrick Small (born March 8, 1937 in Portland, Oregon) is a retired Major League Baseball player who competed for Major League Baseball from 1955 to 1958 for the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Athletics. In 1955, Small was signed as a free agent compensation baby by the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers were obligated to keep Small on the main league roster for both 1955 and 1956, although in the major leagues Small was primarily used as an outfielder.
It was decided in 1960 that Small would be converted into a pitcher while playing in the minor leagues.
He was sent back to the outfield after being shelled in a few appearances.
Small did make one pitching appearance in 1962, his last year as a professional baseball player.
