James Broadbent (born 24 May 1949) is an English actor.

In his supporting role as John Bayley in the film Iris (2001), he received an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, as well as a BAFTA TV Award and a Golden Globe for his leading role in the television film Longford (2006).

Early life

Broadbent was born in Holton, Lincolnshire, on May 24th, the second son of Doe "Dee" Broadbent, a sculptor, and furniture maker Roy Laverick Broadbent. Both parents of Broadbent were amateur actors who co-founded the Holton Players acting troupe in Holton. By the BBC, the two soldiers have been characterized as conscientious objectors who "worked the land" rather than participating in World War II. A former Methodist Chapel in Wickenby was purchased by Holton Players in 1970, who turned it into a 100-seat theatre named Broadbent Theatre in honor of Roy Broadbent, who supervised the conversion.

Broadbent was educated at Leighton Park School, a Quaker school in Reading, and briefly attended art college before heading to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He graduated in 1972. In Patrick Barlow's satisfaction with the mock National Theatre of Brent, he appeared onstage.

Personal life

Anastasia Lewis, a painter and former theatre designer, has been married to Broadbent since 1987. Lewis has no children, but he does have two sons from his previous marriage.

As the downtrodden assistant Wallace to Patrick Barlow's self-important actor-manager character Desmond Olivier Dingle, Broadbent's early stage work included a number of productions for The National Theatre of Brent. In humorous and religious tales of historical and religious history, such as The Complete Guide to Sex, The Greatest Story Ever Told Revolution!
