She has served on the board of Physicians for Social Responsibility in Greater Boston since 1998. In 1998 and 2000, Clean Water Action's "Not in Anyone's Backyard Award" and its "Children's Health Hero Award" were given to her, as well as Salem State College's "Friend of the Earth Award" in 2004.
Stein coauthored two articles by the Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility, In Harm's Way: Toxic Risks to Child Growth (2000), and Environmental Risks to Healthy Aging (2009). In the peer-reviewed Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Harm's Way's study was republished in 2004.
Stein left the Democratic Party and joined the Green Party after "the Democratic Party killed campaign finance reform in my state."
