Jessica June Rowe (born 22 June 1970) is an Australian journalist, author, and television presenter.

She was co-host of Studio ten on Network Ten until March 2018, and she was also a member of the Order of Australia for her mental health activism.

Early life

Rowe completed a Bachelor of Arts at Sydney Girls High School and Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, in 1993. During her studies, she worked as a broadcaster with on-campus community radio station 2MCE-FM. Rowe graduated from the University of Sydney with a Master of International Studies degree in 2003.

Personal life

Rowe is married to Australian television journalist and Nine News Sydney presenter Peter Overton and has two children.

Rowe suffered from post-natal depression following the birth of her first daughter and as a result of her court battle with Channel Nine. She also stated that separate from her more recent postpartum depression, she had previously been on antidepressant drugs and that she had been receiving psychotherapy for clinical depression, anxiety disorder, and panic attacks.

Rowe has written about her use of anti-depressants and counselling; "To me, asking for assistance is one of the most brave and best things you will ever do." "It saved me." She advocates for mental health awareness and services and is a spokesperson for Beyondblue.

Jessica Rowe Career

Career

Rowe began as a receptionist and then as a weather presenter for Prime7. She began working as a news presenter for Channel Ten in 1996. With Ron Wilson, she delivered Ten News at Five bulletin to Ten News at Five in Sydney. Rowe ceased her hosting duties at Network Ten in 2005.

Rowe's first book, The Best of Times, The Worst of Times, a recollection of her mother's bipolar disorder battle, was published in October 2005. Penelope Rowe, Rowe's mother, co-wrote the book.

Rowe joined the Nine Network in 2006 to host the Today breakfast show, alongside Karl Stefanovic, who took over Tracy Grimshaw. Network Ten has taken court action over Rowe's defection to the Nine Network, citing a provision in her deal that barred her from working with a competing broadcaster until June 2006. The case was dismissed by the Supreme Court on December 30, 2005, allowing Rowe to make his debut on Today on January 30, 2006.

"On-air giggling, the absence of solid journalistic credentials, and a lack of chemistry with co-host Karl Stefanovic were all among the reasons for her arrival at Today. Rowe was also chastised for an on-air gaffe involving Australian Brigadier Michael Slater, which revealed during a live cross that Rowe was being stage managed while Rowe attempted to use old looting and violence footage, even though Brigadier Slater told her it was a "couple of days old."

During this period, Nine Network CEO Eddie McGuire made public announcement in June 2006 that Rowe had been "sacked" as part of "a violent and unprecedented vilification campaign."

Rowe left the Nine Network on May 6, 2007 due to "pay disputes" following her return from maternity leave.

Rowe returned to television in 2007 and joined Seven Network as a news presenter for Seven News in Sydney. Patti Newton and Mark Beretta were also cast members on the seventh series of Dancing with the Stars. On the show, Rowe took seventh place.

Rowe was named as the host of Weekend Sunrise in December 2010, replacing Sarah Cumming and Sharyn Ghidella. She appeared on the Seven Network before being dropped from the network in 2013.

Rowe released Love, Wisdom, Motherhood (Allen & Unwin), a collection of her interviews with other Australian mothers on their experiences with motherhood. Quentin Bryce, Lisa McCune, Wendy Harmer, and Tina Arena were interviewed in the book.

Rowe appeared in the stage production of Side By Side By Sondheim at the Theatre Royal in Sydney in April 2012 as the narrator in a gala concert starring Ruthie Henshall. The gala was held to raise money for White Ribbon Australia, a charity that aims to raise the risk of violence against women. This was the start of a continuing tour that began in April 2011 at Seymour Centre in Sydney.

Rowe returned to Network Ten to co-host their latest morning television show Studio 10. The show premiered on October 4, 2013 and Rowe was joined by co-hosts Ita Buttrose, Sarah Harris, and Joe Hildebrand. Denise Drysdale was the show's fifth co-host in 2015. According to the OzTAM TV ratings, it came in second place on October 12, 2016. On Monday, Studio ten is on air 8.30am-12.00pm, Monday.

Rowe was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia at 2015 Australia Day for her mental health activism in January 2015. "I was so humble and just blessed" to be honoured, she joked, "I was hoping I would get a tiara."

It's the little girl in me!"

Rowe appeared in Bonnie Lythgoe's stage performance of Aladdin and his Wondrous Lamp in Sydney, Australia, in July 2015. Ian Dickson and Beau Ryan were also included in the film.

Rowe wrote Is This My Beautiful Life in August 2015. (Allen & Unwin) In which she offered insights into her work as well as her battles with postnatal depression, she talked about her postnatal depression. "The effect of her revealing memoir should not be underestimated," the Sydney Morning Herald said.

Rowe fronted a television and print advertising campaign for Woolworths supermarkets in September 2015. She worked as a checkout assistant at her local Woolworths supermarket during her schooling years in 1987.

Rowe resigned from Studio 10 in March 2018, citing a desire to spend more time with her children as the reason for her departure. Rowe did not leave the station on voluntarily, according to the station's website, but Channel ten was due to fire Rowe for over a year.

On the Jess Rowe Big Talk Show Podcast, Rowe interviewed Australian Senator Pauline Hanson about her personal life and political experience in September 2021. Rowe was chastised by various activists for airing the podcast, with Grace Tame, 2021 Australian of the Year, saying that "Pauline does not need assistance to be understood," but those who have oppression are both driven and reinforced." Rowe started defending the interview, saying she and Hanson "strongly disagreed with Hanson's politics" and that the discussion was "about Hanson living through some of her life's toughest times and the courage she has displayed." Rowe later deleted the episode from her podcast, posting an apology on Twitter and thanking Tame and Indigenous comedian Nakkiah Lui for their remarks.

"You are supposed to be a journalist," Indigenous activist and former Labor Party President Warren Mundine said in the post. You only listened to the cancellation free speech mob." Tim Blair, Joe Hildebrand, Chris Uhlmann, Paul Barry, Peter van Onselen, and Neil Mitchell protested Rowe's decision to scrap the podcast.
