Jessica Mauboy Career

Music career

Mauboy auditioned for the fourth season of Australian Idol in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, singing Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing." Her audition impressed all three judges, and she then advanced to the semifinals and then to the top twelve. The media cited her prior Sony employment as the reason for dismissal, but the producers refused to ban her from the show because it had already ended. Judge Kyle Sandilands weighed in on Mauboy's weight in the final 11 weeks, after her interpretation of Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away" in the film industry, saying she should "lose the jelly belly" if she wanted to succeed in the music industry. Mauboy was astonished by the remark. Mauboy said, "I kind of took it as a joke" in an interview with Alicia Neil of Who magazine, two years after the incident. "I look back on it as a positive thing; it made me a better person."

Mauboy's first touchdown of the season came from judge Mark Holden's rendition of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" in the final ten weeks of the season. She had a sore throat that culminated in a poor interpretation of Phil Collins' "Another Day in Paradise" and near-elimination, putting her in third place in the bottom three. She never made it to the bottom of the rankings again, and Damien Leith's final show was a hit. Mauboy was voted runner-up to Leith at the grand finale on November 27th at the Sydney Opera House on November 27th. She signed a recording deal with Sony Music Australia in December 2006, just two weeks after Idol came to an end.

On February 24, 2007, Mauboy's debut live album The Journey was released, but it came with two discs. On one of the re-recorded covers of Mauboy's chosen songs as part of the top twelve on Australian Idol, while on the other hand, there was a DVD of her performances on the series. The Journey debuted at number four on the ARIA Albums Chart and was awarded gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association for deliveries of 35,000 units. Mauboy became the new member of the Girl group Young Divas in September 2007, replacing Ricki-Lee Coulter, one of the group's original members who had left in June to restart her solo career. New Attitude, the band's second studio album, was released on November 24, 2007, and was rated gold on debut. The album was preceded by lead single "Turn Me Loose," which reached the top of the ARIA Singles Chart, at number 15 on the ARIA Singles Chart. Mauboy accepted the In2Oz initiative by the Australian government in March 2008, which was intended to strengthen ties with Indonesia. She travelled to Indonesia for a three-day tour around the region, including an appearance on Indonesian Idol. Mauboy had begun to work on her first solo studio album at this time. Mauboy revealed in August 2008 that after a year with the Young Divas, she had to resign in order to focus on her solo career. Paulini, the Founding member, had already decided to leave, leaving Kate DeAraugo and Emily Williams as the only remaining members. However, DeAraugo and Williams both resumed their solo careers, and the group officially disbanded.

Been Waiting, Mauboy's debut studio album, debuted on November 22, 2008, putting it at number 11 on the charts and earning double platinum for 140,000 units. Mauboy co-wrote eleven of the album's songs, which were produced by Audius Mtawarira, Israel Cruz, Jonas Jeberg, Cutfather, Adam Reily, Fingaz, and Kwamé. Critics also gave the album high marks. Flo Rida, an American rapper, reached the top of the charts with his album "Running Back," which was rated double platinum. The second single, "Burn," became Mauboy's first number-one single and was certified platinum. She had flown to the United States in February to work on the record in Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta with American songwriters and producers, the bulk of whom she had not worked with before. Mauboy co-wrote eight of the album's songs. Critics generally disagree on 'Em Girls.' Majhid Heath of ABC Online Indigenous rated the album two-and-a-half out of five actors as "non-cohesive, auto-tuned ravaged pop/R&B that strips away this brilliant young singer's talent."
