Jesse N. Schell (Born, 1970) is an American video game designer, author, and CEO of Schell Games, as well as a Distinguished Professor of the Practice of Entertainment Technology at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), a joint master's program of the College of Fine Arts and School of Computer Science in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Jesse Schell earned a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and later obtained a Master's Degree in Information Networking from Carnegie Mellon University.
Jesse began his career as a computer engineer for IBM and Bell Communications Research, and he later moved to Los Angeles to work with Disney Imagineering.
Career
Jesse Schell, who graduated from the Information Networking Institute at CMU in 1994 with a Masters of Science in computer networking and virtual reality, went on to work for Bell Labs. He joined Walt Disney Imagineering, where he spent seven years as a programmer, manager, and creative director on several projects. These included rides for theme parks like DisneyQuest and hugely multiplayer online games such as Toontown Online. During his time at Disney, he met Carnegie Mellon professor Randy Pausch, who was on sabbatical in the laboratory where Schell worked. Schell was invited to become a faculty member when Pausch founded the Entertainment Technology Center at CMU. Schell joined the faculty in 2002.
Schell Games was established in 2002 by Schell. The corporation is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and hires over 100 people. He is now CEO. Schell was named one of Pittsburgh's top executives at Tech 50 in 2016, and a year before, Schell was named one of the city's 50 most influential individuals.
Schell released The Art of Game Design in 2008, using the design techniques he learned during his time at the ETC. In 2014, a second printing of this book was released.
At the ETC, he continues to teach Building Virtual Worlds and Game Design.
Schell is well-known for his numerous talks about game design, but he is best known for his 'Beyond Facebook'', which was adopted as a TED "Best of the Web" talk.
Schell was given a Carnegie Science Award in the Entrepreneur category in 2015.
