Stiller and Meara are the parents of actor Ben Stiller, whose co-starred in the films Zoolander, Heavyweights, Hot Pursuit, The Heartbreak Kid, and Zoolander 2.
Stiller is known for his empathetic, yelling demeanour.
Early life
Stiller, the eldest of four children, was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on June 8, 1927, to Bella (née Citron; 1902-1999), and William Stiller (1896–1999), a taxi and bus driver. His family was Jewish. His paternal grandparents immigrated from Galicia (southeast Poland and western Ukraine), and his mother was born in Frampol, Poland. He lived in the Williamsburg and East New York areas before his family migrated to the Lower East Side, where he attended Seward Park High School and performed Adolf Hitler in a school production.
Stiller graduated from Syracuse University in 1950, with a bachelor's degree in Speech and Drama after returning from active service in the United States Army during World War II. He also studied drama at HB Studio in Greenwich Village. Stiller, along with Gene Saks and Jack Klugman, produced Coriolanus' 1953 Phoenix Theater performance (which was shot by John Houseman). "The best trio of Shakespearian clowns I've ever seen on stage" was "the best trio of Shakespearian clowns I've ever seen on any stage," Houseman says.
Stiller met actress Anne Meara in 1953 and married in 1954. Meara had never considered doing comedy before Stiller suggested it. "Jerry started us being a comedy team," she said. "I always thought I'd be a good comedian." They joined the Chicago improvisational group The Compass Players (which later became The Second City) and began performing together after departing. They were performing in nightclubs in New York City in 1961, and by the following year, they were considered a "national phenomenon" by the New York Times.
Personal life
Stiller was married to Anne Meara for more than 60 years from 1954 to her death on May 23, 2015. Both agents met in an agent's office. Meara was distraught about her casting agent's presence, so Stiller took her out for coffee—all he could afford—and the pair stayed together ever since. Before the couple's two children were born, Meara was Irish Catholic and converted to Judaism. They had two children together: actress Amy Stiller (born 1961) and actor-comedian Ben Stiller (born 1965). He had two grandchildren through Ben.
