Jerry Nolan Career

Career

Billy Murcia, a Brooklyn native, was hired by the New York Dolls in 1972 to replace Billy Murcia, who had died of asphyxiation as a result of a failed attempt to recover him from a drug overdose when on tour in England early in the band's career. In 1973, the Dolls signed their first contract with Mercury Records. Nolan was also a childhood friend of Kiss drummer Peter Criss, who also auditioned for the Dolls at the same time. He appeared on Wayne (Jayne) County's "Queen Elizabeth", Billy Squier's "Kicks," and was the only male member of Suzi Quatro's Detroit-based band Cradle. Jerry was drumming for the power trio "Shaker," a New York band that regularly opened for the Dolls when he was recruited to replace Billy. Nolan appeared on the Dolls' first two albums (New York Dolls and Too Much Too Soon).

Nolan and Johnny Thunders joined the Dolls in 1975 after much internal conflict and a short stint under new Sex Pistols boss Malcolm McLaren's leadership. Richard Hell, formerly of the Neon Boys and Television, was called by the two musicians to form The Heartbreakers. Walter Lure was welcomed into the fold and Billy Rath replaced him. The Heartbreakers were invited by the Sex Pistols in 1976 on their infamous "Anarchy in the United Kingdom" tour, which also included support from The Clash and The Damned. The Heartbreakers took up permanent residence in London shortly after the tour, and appeared in numerous shows from 1976 to 1977. Nolan left the band soon after releasing their first studio album, L.A.M.F. He was disappointed that the album was not properly mixed in October 1977. Nolan continued to perform with The Heartbreakers, but not until 1977 as a "hired drummer."

Nolan joined The Idols, led by Steve Dior and Barry Jones in early 1978. Simon Vitesse, the ex-Chelsea bassist, appeared on Track Records for four demos in London and then toured America later this year with Arthur Kane on bass. In 1978 on Ork Records, the Idols also released "You" b/w "The Girl That I Love" b/w. Nolan also played drums for Sid Vicious' ill-fated New York City solo performances in September 1978, as well as Arthur Kane and Steve Dior backing up Vicious. On the last live date, Mick Jones from The Clash performed on guitar with Vicious' backing band. On Sid Sings, live recordings from these shows can be obtained. The Idols continued to perform shows up and down the east coast, but the last line up, consisting of Jerry Nolan, Steve Dior, Barry Jones, Arthur Kane, and Walter Lure, broke up in 1979. In the early 1980s, Nolan rejoined Steve Dior and Barry Jones in their new band, The London Cowboys, which also included Glen Matlock from The Sex Pistols. Jerry didn't play drums on the London Cowboys' two albums Animal Pleasure (1982) and Tall in the Saddle (1984), but he did play drums on their live album On Stage (1986).

Nolan met Charlotte (Lotten) Nedeby, whom he soon married while touring with Johnny Thunderbirds in 1982. Nolan took up residence in Sweden from the 1980s to today. He performed drums and singing lead vocals in Sweden on a solo single with the Teneriffa Cowboys of an unreleased Heartbreaker's song "Take a Chance With Me" and a new song, "Pretty Baby" that was released on Tandan Records in 1982. Chuck Berry's "Havana Moon" was released on Sword/Tandan Records in 1985, and "Countdown Love" was released on Sword/Tandan Records in 1995, the first in Scandinavian Rock music released on Sword/Tandan Records in 1985. Michael Thimrén, Teneriffa Cowboys' other co-singer and guitarist, appeared on "Lickin' My Boots" and "Notorious Liar" as well as other unreleased songs from the 1982-1983 period. Nolan recorded "I Refuse (To Live in the United States)" and "Sleep With You" in 1983, as well as "Sleep With You." He was also a member of the short-lived Ugly Americans with fellow ex-Doll Sylvain Sylvain. Until the Thunders' death in 1991, Johnny Thunders' collaboration continued on a regular basis.

By a few months, Nolan outlived his long-time buddy by only a few months. He was on a recording project with singer/songwriter/guitar Greg Allen and bassist Chicago Vin Earnshaw during that time. In late 1991, when Nolan was being treated for bacterial meningitis and bacterial pneumonia at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York, he had a stroke and went into a coma from which he never recovered. He spent his remaining weeks on a life support system before he died on January 14, 1992. He was buried at Mount Saint Mary's Cemetery in Flushing, New York.

Stranded in the Jungle - Jerry Nolan's Wild Ride - A tale of drugs, fashion, the New York Dolls, and Punk Rock was released in 2017 by Hal Leonard Corporation's Backbeat imprint. Curt Weiss, a writer, was formerly Lewis King, drummer for Beat Rodeo and the Rockats.
