Personal life and education
Jerry Greenfield grew up on Long Island, to a Jewish family. He attended Merrick Avenue Junior High School, where he met Ben Cohen in 1963. Both Greenfield and Cohen attended Calhoun High School and remained classmates until they both graduated and moved to Long Island to attend college.
Greenfield began working as an ice cream scooper in the school's cafeteria and wanted to pursue a pre-med program.
Greenfield did not enroll in medical school after graduating in 1973. At this point, Greenfield decided to return to New York, where he shared an apartment with Cohen and worked as a laboratory technician. Greenfield was barred from medical school once more in 1974, and he and his future wife, Elizabeth Skarie, were relocated to North Carolina, where they continued to work as a lab technician.
Greenfield lived with Cohen in Saratoga Springs, New York, during the 1977 summer. They decided against opening a bagel store first, and decided to open an ice cream store. They opened their first store in Burlington, Vermont, after taking a five-dollar correspondence course in ice-cream making. Ben & Jerry's opened in 1978 in the summer.
Greenfield left the firm in Arizona to assist Elizabeth, who needed a Ph.D. in psychology during the 1980s. In 1985, the couple returned to Vermont, where Greenfield took over as Director of Mobile Promotions.
Greenfield married Elizabeth Skarie in 1987 and they had a son Tyrone in 1988. He lives in Williston, Vermont, a tiny town just outside Burlington.
Greenfield and Cohen were arrested at a Democracy Awakening protest in Washington, D.C., on April 18, 2016.
