Jerry Greenfield Life

Jerry Greenfield, born March 14, 1951, is an American businessman and philanthropist.

On Long Island, Greenfield grew up. He is a co-founder of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Holdings, Inc.

He attended Oberlin College, where he followed a pre-med curriculum before graduating in 1973.

Before deciding to go into business with Ben Cohen, a childhood friend, he applied unsuccessfully for medical school. After taking a course in ice cream making from Penn State, Greenfield, and Cohen, they opened their first ice cream store in downtown Burlington, Vermont.

Since being sold to Unilever, a British-Dutch company, in 2000, the company has opened nearly 200 franchised shops and reports sales of $237 million per year.

Personal life and education

Jerry Greenfield grew up on Long Island, to a Jewish family. He attended Merrick Avenue Junior High School, where he met Ben Cohen in 1963. Both Greenfield and Cohen attended Calhoun High School and remained classmates until they both graduated and moved to Long Island to attend college.

Greenfield began working as an ice cream scooper in the school's cafeteria and wanted to pursue a pre-med program.

Greenfield did not enroll in medical school after graduating in 1973. At this point, Greenfield decided to return to New York, where he shared an apartment with Cohen and worked as a laboratory technician. Greenfield was barred from medical school once more in 1974, and he and his future wife, Elizabeth Skarie, were relocated to North Carolina, where they continued to work as a lab technician.

Greenfield lived with Cohen in Saratoga Springs, New York, during the 1977 summer. They decided against opening a bagel store first, and decided to open an ice cream store. They opened their first store in Burlington, Vermont, after taking a five-dollar correspondence course in ice-cream making. Ben & Jerry's opened in 1978 in the summer.

Greenfield left the firm in Arizona to assist Elizabeth, who needed a Ph.D. in psychology during the 1980s. In 1985, the couple returned to Vermont, where Greenfield took over as Director of Mobile Promotions.

Greenfield married Elizabeth Skarie in 1987 and they had a son Tyrone in 1988. He lives in Williston, Vermont, a tiny town just outside Burlington.

Greenfield and Cohen were arrested at a Democracy Awakening protest in Washington, D.C., on April 18, 2016.

Ben & Jerry's 'free cone day' returns for 2024 - here's how to get as many free ice creams as you can eat

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 20, 2024
The annual 'free cone day' for Ben & Jerry's has returned, and the corporation intends to give away 1 million scoops, making it the biggest ever for the festival, which began in 1979 on Tuesday. Ice cream enthusiasts can get as many free scoops as they want, but they can only get one at a time, so they must wait in line each time. This tip from Generous Ben & Jerry: 'It's easiest to jump back in the queue on free cone day with a scoop already in hand.'

After a disastrous Glaxo bid, Unilever chief Alan Jope is expected to resign

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 26, 2022
Following a period in which it has been criticized for 'woke' decision-making and clashed with Ben & Jerry's founders, Alan Jope will step down as chief executive at the end of 2023. Unilever's shares soared 1.8%, or 73.5p, to 4100p on yesterday.

Unilever is accused of breaching a 22-year-old merger agreement, according to Woke Ben & Jerry's founders

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 19, 2022
In a televised interview with MSNBC, Ben Cohen, the co-founder of Ben and Jerry's (pictured with business partner Jerry Greenfield), said that Unilever has'usurped their power' by continuing to offer ice cream to the Israeli license holder. Jerry Greenfield, Cohen's business partner, said the deal is legally binding and must be adhered to. However, Unilever has said that it has reserved the right to make operational decisions for Ben and Jerry's families, and that the transaction cannot be undone as it has irrevocably closed.
