Jermaine Levan Kearse (born February 6, 1990) is an American football wide receiver for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League. (NFL).

In 2012, he was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent and later won Super Bowl XLVIII with the team, defeating the Denver Broncos.

At Washington, Kearse played college football.

Early years

Kearse grew up as a military brat; his father, who served as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Army, was a soldier. He attended Lakes High School in Lakewood and played high school football for the Lancers while living in Fort Lewis (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord). He passed for 903 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior.

Marisa Ventura married Kearse. Both parents have two children. Kearse is a Christian.

Jermaine Kearse Career

College career

Kearse played for the Huskies of the Pac-12 Conference at the University of Washington in Seattle. He spent his time there under head coaches Tyrone Willingham and Steve Sarkesian. He appeared in all 12 games, with two starts and two touchdowns, as a true freshman in 2008, and had 20 receptions for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Kearse led the team in receptions with 91 yards as a sophomore in 2009, his first season with Sarkesian, and touchdowns with eight. He was selected as a second-team All-Pac-10 pick.

Kearse played in all 13 games as a junior and then led the team in receptions with 63 for 1,005 yards and 12 touchdowns. For the second year in a row, he was named second-team All-Pac-10. He had 47 receptions for 699 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior in 2011.

Professional career

On April 28, 2012, Kearse was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent on November 4 and played six-yards against the Minnesota Vikings. He appeared in seven games for Seattle in 2012 as a rookie, with three catches for 31 yards and playing on special teams. During the offseason, Kearse underwent LASIK surgery to improve his vision.

Kearse made a 43-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to lift the Seahawks to a 12–7 score during the 2013 season. The score was the first of Kearse's professional career.

Kearse had a 28-yard touchdown and blocked a punt that resulted in a safety in the 34-28 loss in a Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts. In Week 10 against the Atlanta Falcons, he scored a 43-yard touchdown after a trick play when Marshawn Lynch threw the ball back to Russell Wilson in a 33–10 victory. Kearse played in 2013 for 15 games with 346 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Kearse made a 35-yard touchdown pass from Wilson in the NFC Championship against division rival San Francisco 49ers on January 19, 2014. The Seahawks eventually defeated the game 23–17 and advanced to Super Bowl XLVIII. Kearse had four catches for 65 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, breaking four tackles to get to the endzone during the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos. The Seahawks defeated Kearse and the team for their first Super Bowl victory in franchise history, beating the Seahawks 43–8.

Kearse appeared in 15 games during the 2014 regular season, totaling 537 receiving yards and a touchdown. In Week 5 against the Washington Redskins, he scored his lone touchdown of the season in the 27–17 victory.

In Week 3, Kearse gave Russell Wilson his first pass of his NFL career, a 17-yard pass to Russell Wilson in a Super Bowl XLVIII rematch against the Denver Broncos, a 26-20 overtime victory.

Kearse continued his streak of scoring touchdowns in postseason games against the Carolina Panthers in the second quarter, catching the ball with one hand. He will have two other passes in the game, each going for 33 yards, and all receivers will have 129 receiving yards on his three touchdowns. The Seahawks defeated 31-17 and advanced to the NFC Championship.

Kearse scored his first completion, a 35-yard game-winning overtime touchdown, giving Seattle a 28-22 victory after falling behind 16–0 at halftime. For the second year in a row, the Seahawks advanced to the Super Bowl. Kearse had been shot on five throws earlier in the game, with the first four being intercepted (two of them being tipped by Kearse) and the fifth being incomplete. It was Kearse's fourth straight postseason game in which he had a touchdown pass.

Kearse catches the ball in the final minute of Super Bowl XLIX after cornerback Malcolm Butler tipped it, and the ball bounced four times off Kearse's body before he landed the ball. The play seemed to be a remake of the Helmet Catch. However, Butler intercepted Wilson at the goal line with less than 30 seconds remaining, effectively ending the Seahawks' chances of winning the second championship in a row as they lost to the Patriots 28-24.

In the season-opening 34–31 overtime loss to the Rams against the Browns, Kearse caught eight passes for 76 yards, setting a new single-game record for receptions (breaking his previous record of five). On a 30-yard pass from Wilson in Week 5 in Cincinnati, Kearse scored his first touchdown of the season on a 30-yard pass from Wilson in Week 5. In the 39–30 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 11, Kearse had four receptions for 47 yards and two touchdowns. In Week 15, against the Cleveland Browns, he had a career-high 110 receiving yards against the 30–13 beater. Kearse played in all 16 games for the first time in his career, finishing with 685 receiving yards and a career-high five touchdowns.

Kearse had 11 receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the Divisional Round against the Carolina Panthers as the Seahawks lost by a score of 31–24.

Kearse passed for 511 yards and one touchdown in the 2016 season. Seattle won the NFC West and made the playoffs. In Week 16, against the Arizona Cardinals in a 34–31 loss on Christmas Eve, his lone touchdown was in Week 16. In the Wild Card Round, they defeated the Detroit Lions before falling to the eventual NFC Champions, the Atlanta Falcons, in the Divisional Round.

In exchange for defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, Kearse and a second-round draft pick were traded to the New York Jets on September 1, 2017.

Kearse made his Jets debut in the 21–12 loss to the Buffalo Bills on September 10, receiving seven receptions for 59 yards in his season opener. He had four receptions for 64 yards and his first two receiving touchdowns with the Jets in Week 2, both coming from quarterback Josh McCown. His match against the Browns was his second multi-touchdown game of his career. Kearse had 7 receptions for 105 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers in Week 12. In a game in which the Jets lost 35-27, he and fellow receiver Robby Anderson had over 100 receiving yards in a joint game. Kearse continued his excellent play against the Kansas City Chiefs on Week 13, highlighted by a spectacular one-handed catch by the sideline boundary line and a 51-yard reception play later in the game. The Jets defeated the Jets 38-31, with him finishing the game with 9 receptions and 157 receiving yards. Overall, he had a 66.5 receptions for 810 receiving yards and five touchdowns in the 2017 season.

He had nine receptions against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6, a season-high 94 yards. In Week 11 against the New England Patriots, he scored his first receiving touchdown of the season. He finished the 2018 season with 37 receptions for 371 yards and one receiving touchdown.

Kearse joined the Detroit Lions on June 6, 2019. In Week 1 of the preseason against the New England Patriots, Kearse sustained a broken leg early in the first quarter. On August 10, 2019, he was put on injured reserve.

Kearse's resignation was announced on September 29, 2020.
