Jermaine Anthony Jenas (born 18 February 1983) is an English football pundit and former professional footballer.

He appeared in central midfield for Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, and Queens Park Rangers, scoring a total of 39 goals from 341 appearances.

He has also appeared 21 times for the senior England national football team, scoring one goal. Jenas made his professional debut at age 17 for his boyhood club Nottingham Forest, who were playing in the second tier of the British leagues, before going to Newcastle United, where he earned his first senior England cap in February 2003 aged 19 and was named PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2002-2003 season. Jenas struggled to reach the career heights aspirated of him in 2005, when he joined Tottenham in 2005 for £7 million, beating the Football League Cup in the 2007–08 season.

He travelled with England to the 2006 FIFA World Cup but was an unemployed replacement; he played his last England match in 2009. In 2011, and Nottingham Forest in the second tier of the Premier League, before he transferred to Queens Park Rangers in January 2013.

While recovering from his last injury, he jumped into television broadcasting as a pundit, a position in which he has continued as a journalist, most recently for the BBC on Match of the Day and BT Sport.

Early life and education

Jenas was born in Nottingham and is of mixed Afro-Caribbean and English descent. Dennis, his father, was born with the surname Genas, but it was changed by a deed poll because he wanted the initials to be "D." J" is the product of an ordinary person. Dennis also played semi-professionally with Shepshed Charterhouse in the 1980s. He grew up on a council estate and was educated at the Catholic Becket School in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire. "A lot of bigotry was directed against me," Jenas says, but also toward my mother, questions regarding my dad, and myself on the street."

Personal life

Jenas and his partner Ellie have two children together, though he has an older daughter who lives in the United States with her mother. He now lives in Hertfordshire. He loves cooking. Jenas' son's birth was announced on October 8th, 2021.

Jermaine Jenas Career

Club career

Jenas started his career at Nottingham Forest and later in the First Division. He made his FA Cup debut on January 7, 2001, defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1–0 home loss. In the 68th minute of his 3–0 home loss to Crystal Palace, his first game of the season, he was back in action as a starter in his first league game, and David Freeman was brought to the 68th minute by a rookie.

Jenas played regularly in 2001-2002 and scored his first senior goal at Barnsley on August 18th. Jenas was sold to Newcastle United for £5 million in February 2002 after four goals in 33 games across all competitions.

Jenas joined Newcastle United from Nottingham Forest in 2002. Newcastle United, a youth investment, paid a £5 million transfer fee on Jenas, making him the second most expensive teenager in British football after Robbie Keane. He had been on a teenager for months before Newcastle United broke the club's record and set a new British record for a teenager in signing the 2002 Young European Footballer of the Year award winner and Portuguese national Hugo Viana for £8.5 million. Jenas first experience in international tournament football came when he was in the England squad and competing in the U21 European Championships held in Switzerland.

Jenas played 12 games for Newcastle United and Newcastle United in the 2002–03 Champions League during the 2001–2002 football season. He received the PFA Young Player of the Year award in his first full season with Newcastle in 2002–03. In the 2002–2003 season, he played 32 games in the Premier League and scored 6 goals. Jenas' debut with the club was shaky, and his two subsequent seasons were disappointing; he was known for his strong "box-to-box" play and ability to score from midfield; Jenas appeared in 31 Premier League games and scored 2 goals in the 2003-2004 season. Jenas appeared in 31 games in Premier League games in 2004-05, scoring one goal. Despite briefly regaining his form and winning the vice captaincy under new boss Graeme Souness early in the 2004-05 season, Jenas' form dropped again in 48 appearances. In 152 appearances for Newcastle, he scored a total of 12 goals.

He appeared at Newcastle United with international footballers including Laurent Robert, Gary Speed, Alan Shearer, Shay Given, Nolberto Solano, Patrick Kluivert, and Kieron Dyer. Newcastle played in European football for three seasons, twice in the Champions League and twice in the UEFA Cup in 2003–04, after losing at a group stage in the Champions League and twice in the 2004–05 UEFA Cup. When with Newcastle United, Jenas gained 14 of his 21 caps for England. Newcastle United accepted a £7 million bid for him from Tottenham Hotspur on August 31, 2005, the age of 22.

When Jenas was not enjoying life at Newcastle, rumors of his death were confirmed early in the 2005-06 season by manager Graeme Souness, who said the player lived "in a goldfish bowl." On transfer deadline day, he was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £7 million. Jenas scored seven goals from midfield during the season as Tottenham qualified for the UEFA Cup. With his second goal in Tottenham's 3–1 FA Cup fourth round victory over Southend United, he marked his return from a 13-match absence due to injury.

Jenas signed a new five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur on August 29, 2007, keeping him at the club until 2012. Jenas' form under Juande Ramos has greatly improved and he had first-rate performances under his new regime, but also from some personal words of encouragement from the Spaniard. Jenas was involved in the 1–1 draw and the 5–1 victory over Arsenal in both legs of the League Cup's semi-finals, scoring the opening goals in both games. In the 2–1 League Cup final victory over Chelsea over February 24, Jenas sent Jonathan Woodgate for the winning goal.

Jenas extended his five-year deal at the end of July 2008, extending his Tottenham tenure until 2013. Following Robbie Keane and Paul Robinson's departures, he was named Spurs' new vice-captain a few days later. Jenas made his 100th appearance for Tottenham Hotspur on December 26th against Fulham. In a 1–0 victory over West Bromwich Albion, he scored his only goal.

Jenas joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan contract from Tottenham Hotspur on August 31, 2011. At Villa, he wore the number 8 shirt, the same number he had at Spurs. Jenas made his Villa debut on November 5th after a string of niggling injuries, and the team's second-half replacement against Norwich City was eventually named on November 5th. Jenas returned to Villa on Friday for his second appearance against Swansea City as a 69th-minute replacement for striker Emile Heskey.

Jenas played his first game for Villa against Manchester United on December 3rd. He tripped over his own feet and sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon injury in a game in which he, Shay Given and Javier Hernández all stood on stretchers. He was out for six months as a result of the injury, effectively ending his time at the club.

Jenas returned to Tottenham after his recovery after having been given the number 21 for the forthcoming 2012–13 season. Jenas agreed a month-long emergency loan contract with former Nottingham Forest club Nottingham Forest on September 28, 2012. In a 4–1 victory over Barnsley, he scored his first goal of his loan spell. Forest announced on November 1, 2012, that Jenas' loan had been extended until January.

Queens Park Rangers reunited with former manager Harry Redknapp on the last day of the January 2013 transfer window. In a 3–1 home victory over Sunderland on March 9, he scored his first goal for the club. In the following game, he scored once more, defeating Aston Villa 3–2 on March 16th. He made a total of 12 appearances for his new club, but was unable to prevent them from being relegated after three games to go. Jenas suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a training session in April 2014, ruled him out for the remainder of the season after 28 appearances for QPR in the Championship. Despite the fact that his deal came to an end during the 2013-2014 season, he continued with QPR during his recovery process.

International career

Jenas played for England from the under-15s up to the senior team, where he made his debut against Australia on February 12, 2003, under new manager Sven-Göran Eriksson.

Despite being sick with sickness from 2005-06, he recovered enough to be named in the 2006 FIFA World Cup team, but not play at the tournament. He had come as far as getting changed to be drafted as a last-minute replacement before being thwarted by the final whistle.

Spurs' Tom Jones was given a call-up to the England squad for Fabio Capello's first game in charge, a friendly against Switzerland at Wembley Stadium on 6 February 2008; Jenas scored the first goal in the 40th minute as England defeated Switzerland 2–1.

Jenas earned 21 caps at the senior level, with one of them scoring one goal.

ten Tottenham players were hospitalized after the club's infamous 'lasagna-gate' loss against West Ham cost them a Champions League spot in 2006. Jermaine Jenas revealed that ten Tottenham players were sick. Spurs went to the final game of the season against West Ham knowing they would qualify for the Champions League for the first time in history if they won at Upton Park. Arsenal would have drawn a match if Arsenal did not beat Wigan in their last game at Highbury, although a draw would have been sufficient.
