When she was 11 years old, her father was recalled from the Army and the family moved to Paducah, Kentucky. She graduated from Lone Oak High School in 1986 as a National Merit Scholar and then moved to Northwestern University, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. She graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in drama in 1990.
In 1989, Ryan was named Miss Illinois. She appeared in the Miss America 1990 pageant, finishing third runner-up, winning the preliminary swimsuit competition, and singing "On My Own" from Les Misérables for her talent.
Personal life
When attending blackjack at a charity benefit, actress Janet Dawson first met investment banker and likely Republican presidential candidate Jack Ryan in 1990. The couple married in Wilmette, Illinois, on June 15, 1991. Alex, their son, was born on August 15, 1994. During their marriage, Jeri commuted between Los Angeles and Wilmette. They divorced on August 27, 1999. Ryan began dating Star Trek: Voyager producer Brannon Braga a few years after she joined the Voyager cast. They were stalked by Marlon Estacio Pagtakhan, who was sentenced for bullying and assault in May 2001, from February to November 2000.
The Chicago Tribune newspaper and WLS-TV, the local ABC affiliate, fought to have Jack Ryan's nomination for a vacant Senate seat in Illinois start in 2003. Both Jeri and Jack decided to make their divorce papers public, but not their custody records, saying that the former's release could be detrimental to their son.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider agreed to release the custody documents on June 18, 2004. The decision went against both parents' direct request and reversed the decision to seal the papers in the best interest of the child. It was revealed that six years ago, Jeri had accused Jack Ryan of demanding her to perform sexual activities with him in public and in sex clubs in New York, New Orleans, and Paris. Jeri referred to it as "a strange club with cages, whips, and other devices hanging from the ceiling." Jack denied these charges. Despite the fact that Jeri made only a brief statement and refused to comment on the matter during the campaign, Jack opted to withdraw his candidacy; his main rival, Barack Obama, then won the 2004 United States Senate race in Illinois.
According to statements she has made in interviews, Ryan's main passion is gourmet cooking. She moonlighted in the kitchen of the Los Angeles restaurant The House of Commons while starring in Boston Public on weekends. At a chef's charity function in 2003, Ryan encountered French chef Christophe Émé. The two women soon began dating, and Émé and her son Alex moved in with Ryan and his son Alex in San Fernando Valley. Ryan, a "lifelong Francophile," opened the restaurant Ortolan in February 2005, as a result of Émé's friendship. The restaurant, which is located on Third Street in Los Angeles, California, served French food in a modern interpretation. Both were seen on Iron Chef America, where Émé and one sous-chef fought Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto and his two sous-chefs. Denny Crane (William Shatner) and Alan Shore (James Spader) are discussing the arrival of Courtney Reece (Jeri Ryan) at "her favorite restaurant" in season 2, episode 26 of Boston Legal. Despite its success, the restaurant was hit hard by the Great Recession, and it closed in December 2010.
On June 16, 2007, Ryan and Émé married in the Loire Valley, France. Ryan gave birth to a daughter in Los Angeles, California, in March 2008.
