She has received a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actor Guild Award for her role in the series, as well as four Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Garner appeared in Catch Me If You Can (2004) as a performer on Alias, as well as giving a lauded leading role. Go on 30 (2004).

Garner has appeared in supporting and lead roles such as Daredevil (2003) and Elektra (2005), the comedy-drama Juno (2006), and the Invention of Lying (2009).

She appeared in romantic comedy Valentine's Day (2010), the fantasy drama The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012), the family comedy Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, Very Bad Day (2014), the romantic comedy-drama Love, Simon (2018), and the action thriller Peppermint (2018). Garner works as a board member of Save the Children and is often active in early childhood education.

She is also a promoter of anti-paparazzi movements among children of celebrities.

Garner had a five-year relationship with Scott Foley from 1998 to 2003, when they married.

In 2005, Garner married actor Ben Affleck; the two began in 2015 and divorced in 2018.

Garner and Affleck have three children together.

Early life

Jennifer Anne Garner was born in Houston, Texas, but at the age of three, she moved to Charleston, West Virginia. William John Garner, the father, served as a chemical engineer for Union Carbide; Patricia Ann English, a homemaker and later an English teacher at a local college, was a student at the University of On the other hand, she was a homemaker and later an English teacher. She has two sisters. Garner has portrayed herself as a typical middle child who wanted to distinguish herself from her more mature older sister. Although Garner did not grow up in a politically involved household, her father was "very conservative" and her mother was "quietly blue." Every Sunday, she went to Vacation Bible School at a local United Methodist Church. She and her sisters were not allowed to wear makeup, paint their nails, pierce their ears, or dye their hair as teenagers, and she has joked that her family's "take on the world" was "practically Amish."

She attended George Washington High School in Charleston. Garner graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where she changed to theater and became a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She spent the fall semester of 1993 at the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut. She spent the summers in a summer in the summer stock theatre. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1994 with a major in theater performance.

Personal life

On the set of Felicity in 1998, Garner met co-star Scott Foley. On October 19, 2000, the couple married in a reception at their house. In March 2003, the pair were divorced. Garner filed for divorce in May 2003, citing irreconcilable inconsistencies as the reason for the break, and divorce papers were signed in March 2004. Michael Vartan, a film co-star of Alias, appeared on television from August 2003 to mid-2004.

Garner began dating Ben Affleck in August 2004, forming a friendship on the sets of Pearl Harbor (2001) and Daredevil (2003). They married in a private Turks and Caicos ceremony on June 29, 2005. The only guests were Victor Garber, who officiated the wedding, and Rainer Andreesen, who died later. Garner and Affleck have three children together: Violet Anne Affleck, 2005, Seraphina Rose Affleck, 2009, and one son, Samuel Garner Affleck, was born in 2012. The pair revealed their intent to divorce in June 2015 and jointly filed legal papers in April 2017, seeking joint physical and legal custody of their children. In October 2018, the divorce was finalized. "Befor dating Affleck, the filmmaker, when Garner was filming 13 years ago, "her producer, Gary Winick," "Anon," a group for people living with addicts, encouraged her to join Al-Anon. This will be very helpful later on as she advocated Affleck's bouts with alcoholism during their marriage and after they separated. Foley and Affleck were used in her marriages to Scott Foley and Ben Affleck, respectively.

From mid-2018 to early 2020, she dated businessman John C. Miller. According to reports and paparazzi photos, they revived their romance in April 2021 and have been together ever since.

Despite Garner's inability to attend church regularly after moving to Los Angeles, her three children were baptized as members of the United Methodist Church in her hometown of Charleston, West Virginia, where she was born. She and her family began attending weekly Methodist church services in Los Angeles in 2015.

Garner was stalked by Steven Burky from 2002 to 2003, and then from 2008 to 2009. Garner, her then-husband Affleck, and their daughter Violet received a restraining order in 2008. Burky was arrested in December 2009 outside of Violet's preschool. He was charged with two counts of stalking, but he denied it out of insanity. He was declared insane in March 2010, was admitted to California's state mental hospital, and was barred from the Garner-Affleck family for ten years if released.

Jennifer Garner Career

Acting career

Garner appeared in summer stock theatre as a college student. Garner helped sell tickets, create sets, and clean the venues in addition to performing. In 1992, she appeared at the Barn Theatre in Augusta, Illinois, and the Georgia Shakespeare Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, 1994. Garner moved to New York City in 1995. Garner made her first on-screen appearance as Melissa Gilbert's daughter in the romance miniseries Zoya during her first year in the area, earning $150 per week as an understudy for a Roundabout Theatre Company production of A Month in the Country. In 1996, she appeared in the television film Harvest of Fire and as a shopkeeper in the Western miniseries Dead Man's Walk. She appeared in the independent short film In Harm's Way and made one-off appearances in Swift Justice and Law & Order. Garner also started earning more money by serving as a hostess at a restaurant on the Upper West Side.

Garner appeared in the television film Rose Hill in 1997 and made her first film appearance in the period drama Washington Square. She appeared in Mr. Magoo, the 1999 independent drama by Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry, although the bulk of her role was cut from the film. Garner appeared in an episode of Fantasy Island in 1998 and was cast as a series regular in the Fox drama Significant Others, but Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker said there was "no center" to the character as played by Garner. After airing three of six episodes, Fox cancelled the series. Garner's most notable role of 1998 was in J. J. Abrams' college drama Felicity. Garner appeared in Time of Your Life, another Fox drama, in 1999, but it was cancelled midway through the first season. She appeared in the miniseries Aftershock: Earthquake in New York in 1999 and in two episodes of the action drama The Pretender.

Where's My Car? Garner played the girlfriend of Ashton Kutcher's character in the comedy "Dude." (2000). She appeared briefly opposite her husband Foley in the drama Stealing Time and played a tiny part as a nurse in the war epic Pearl Harbor in 2001. Garner appeared in 2001 as the principal of ABC spy drama Alias. J. J. Abrams, the show's producer, wrote the part of Sydney Bristow with Garner in mind. Alias appeared on five seasons from 2001 to 2006; Garner's salary climbed to $150,000 per episode by the show's end. Garner received four nominations for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress during the show's run, as well as a further three Globe nominations.

Garner continued to work in film occasionally as Alias was on television. When Steven Spielberg called to offer her a role as a high-class call girl in Catch Me If You Can (2002), she had an "otherworldly" experience. Spielberg said "she will be the next superstar" after seeing her in Alias. During a one-day shoot, she shot her scene opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Garner's first co-starring film role was in the action film Daredevil (2003), in which she played Elektra to Ben Affleck's Daredevil. Garner had "an aptitude for" the job by doing Alias research, which was something she had acquired "an aptitude for." "Elevate" is more via movement than by way of her lumpy, obvious lines, according to Elvis Mitchell of The New York Times. She hasn't mastered the art of securing contaminated content" in combat. Although Daredevil received mixed feedback, it was a box office hit. She appeared on The Simpsons in 2003 and again in 2003.

Garner's first leading role in the romantic comedy 13 Going on 30 (2004) was lauded. She played a teen who is trapped in the body of a thirty-year-old. Gary Winick was selected to direct the film, and Garner and the others continued to look for other projects to do together until his death in 2011. "You don't want to look somewhere else" when she's on screen, Manohla Dargis of the Los Angeles Times found her to be "startling." "You can pinpoint the moment in which Garner becomes a celebrity," Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman wrote. "Garner is clearly cut out to be America's next Sweetheart," Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post observed, "She has the same magical combination of allure and accessibility that the job calls for." Going on 30 brought in $96 million worldwide. In the 2005 Daredevil spin-off Elektra, Garner reconstructed Elektra's name; it was a box office and a critical failure. Claudia Puig of USA Today said Garner "is much more appealing when she's playing charming and adorable as she did so triumphfully in 13 Going on 30." Garner appeared in Catch and Release's romantic drama. Despite being shot in 2005 in the two seasons of Alias, it was not announced until early 2007 and did not recover its production budget. Garner's ability to mix charm and hell were lauded by Peter Travers of Rolling Stone, but San Francisco Chronicle writer Peter Hartlaub wrote that [she] is occasionally challenged by what could be a simple job."

Garner returned to work in 2007 after a one-year absence following Alias' marriage to Affleck and the birth of her first child. Kyle Buchanan of New York Magazine's "She came into the movie as a woman struggling to adopt a child and left it as the mother you'd give your own child to... Diablo Cody and producer Jason Reitman expertly use Garner's inherent humanity as a trump card." Garner had never "been lovelier or more affecting" as affecting," Entertainment Weekly's Lisa Schwarzbaum said. She appeared in The Kingdom's action thriller The Kingdom earlier this year. During filming in Arizona, she was nursing her baby and was hospitalized on two occasions with heatstroke.

Garner appeared Roxanne to Kevin Kline's Cyrano de Bergerac at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in late 2007 and early 2008. Garner worked with vocal and movement coaches and took French lessons in preparation for the role. "Ms. Garner, I am delighted to announce, makes Roxane a girl worth raving over... [She] says Anthony Burgess' sprightliness with unaffected sprightliness. If she's a tad stilted in the big dramatic finale, her comedic timing is spot on." Her "feistiness" and "lightness of comic touch" impressed the New Yorker's theater critic, as well as her "lightness of comedic touch. In 2008, the play was filmed before a live audience and aired on PBS. Garner became a spokesperson for skin care brand Neutrogena in 2007.

In 2009, Garner appeared in two romantic comedies. She appeared in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, portraying the childhood friend of a well-known photographer and womanizer. Despite receiving poor feedback, the film's grossest was $102.2 million worldwide. Garner's "easy to like and sharp with her timing" was revealed by Michael Phillips of The Chicago Tribune; he was dissatisfied to discover her as "the love interest," not the same as a rounded character. In the same fashion, Manohla Dargis of The New York Times was dissatisfied to see Garner appear as "less a co-star than a place holder" (you can almost see the words "enter generic female lead" in [the] screenplay).

Garner's second appearance of 2009 was in comedian Ricky Gervais' debut The Invention of Lying. Gervais was keen to bring Garner "always smiling and always courteous to everyone"—against style. She portrayed the love interest of the first human with the ability to lie in a world where people can only tell the truth. The film's reviews were mixed, and it took in $32.4 million worldwide. Garner "proves once more," David Edelstein of New York Magazine said (the first time was 13), how a discomfiting comedienne she is. Garner's wheels in her head aren't turning but crumbling off and needing to be screwed back on," she says, while Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle says, "has never been better on camera... Garner will have a comic factory we hadn't seen before."

Garner performed scenes with Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, and Patrick Dempsey in Garry Marshall's ensemble romantic comedy Valentine's Day (2010). The film's debut in the United States was $56.2 million, but it later grossed $110.4 million in domestic and $216.4 million worldwide. Russell Brand and Helen Mirren appeared in the comedy Arthur, a tribute to the 1981 film of the same name directed by Jason Winer and co-starring Russell Brand and Helen Mirren.

For the first time in 2012, Garner played a mother, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, which chronicled a magical pre-adolescent boy whose personality and naveté had a major influence on the people in his neighborhood. Critic reviews mixed the film's success and it took in a modest $56 million worldwide.

Garner was "convincing as a warm-hearted, if volatile mother," according to Claudia Puig of USA Today, while Chicago Tribune reporter Michael Phillips said she brought "fervent sincerity and a welcome touch of comedy eccentricity" to the role. Garner appeared in the satirical comedy Butter, in which she portrayed an overly competitive and socially gifted woman competing in a small Iowa town also in 2012. Butter was sold in limited quantities in certain areas of the United States, only. Butter received mixed feedback and gross revenues of $105,018. "The greatest bigscreen use of Jennifer Garner's comedy gifts since 13 years, goes on" according to Peter Debruge of Variety, "She" knows how to perform parody of the absurd. "Garner is a natural performer, but here she's asked to cackle her lines in a full octave above her natural one," USA Today's Scott Bowles commented. She appeared in the YouTube short Serena in 2012 and became a spokesperson for food company Luvo.

Garner reunited with Matthew McConaughey in the 2013 drama Dallas Buyers Club, portraying a doctor in Texas treating AIDS patients in the mid-1980s. The film received acclaim and was a box office hit. Garner's Peter Travers of Rolling Stone described him as "a radiant actress of rare spirit and sensitivity," and Los Angeles Times reporter Betsy Sharkey said, "Garner is once more cast as a supreme, all-American girl, not a doctor." However, the question of whether the actress has deeper emotional layers to bring to the screen is not addressed here. "It's not a well-rounded job," David Edelstein of New York magazine said, "I've gotten to the point where I'm excited to see Garner in anything." She is ineffective at phoniness." Garner was also the first celebrity spokesperson for Max Mara in 2013.

Garner appeared in the sports drama Draft Day in 2014 as the fictional salary cap analyst for the Cleveland Browns. The film's critical reaction was mixed, with Mick LaSalle of The San Francisco Chronicle describing her role as "not much of a part," she said of her role, but she's perfectly fine in it. Perhaps someday someone will give Garner a chance to be anything other than charming." Garner appeared alongside Steve Carell in the 2014 Disney film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, Very Bad Day, playing the titular protagonist's mother. The film grossed $101 million worldwide. "Garner, who has long mastered the art of playing harried and overworked mothers, is pleasantly frazzled," Sandie Angulo Chen of the Washington Post wrote. In the film "Men, Women & Children," directed by Jason Reitman and co-starring Rosemarie DeWitt, Judy Greer, Dean Norris, and Adam Sandler, an overprotective mother was one of her two film roles in 2014. "Garner does what she can as the Snooping Mom from Hell," the film's producer Christopher Orr of The Atlantic said, but it isn't much." The role is similar to a caricature of her Juno debut, with no real (and crucial) redemption" present. Capital One hired Garner as their spokesperson for their Capital One Venture Air Miles credit card in late 2014.

Danny Collins, a drama based on folk singer Steve Tilston's true story and starring Al Pacino and Annette Bening, played the wife of Bobby Cannavale's character. Garner was released in select theaters and was warmly acknowledged by scholars; Stephanie Merry of The Washington Post said Garner gave the film "a strong jolt of emotion." Garner appeared in the Christian drama Miracles from Heaven in 2016, portraying the mother of a teenage girl who suffered from an incurable disease that was later diagnosed. The film earned $73.9 million worldwide and received mostly mixed feedback from observers, who believed it "makes the most out of an outstanding effort" from Garner. Ken Jaworowski of The New York Times praised a "dedicted" and "heartfelt" performance, while Nigel Smith of The Guardian found "her subtly produced work... highly effective" in an otherwise "crassively manipulative" film. Garner appeared in the critically acclaimed comedy Nine Lives in 2016, playing the second wife of a workaholic father whose mind is trapped within the new cat's new kitten. In Mother's Day 2016, Garner made an uncredited cameo appearance.

Garner appeared in the drama Wakefield, which premiered on TIFF and was announced in May 2017. She appeared in The Tribes of Palos Verdes in 2017 as well as in her friend Judy Greer's debut of Monumental Proportions. She costarred in Love, Simon, an adaptation of the young-adult novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in 2018. Garner starred in the action-revenge film Peppermint, which was released on September 7.

Garner was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in August 2018. Variety praised her "radiant likability" and said she came in second only to Tom Hanks. She appeared on HBO's television show Camping in 2018.

Garner appeared in Quibi's Home Movie: The Princess Bride, a "fan made" recreation of the 1987 film of the same name released in social exile during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was shot in a deliberately DIY style and was designed to raise funds for World Central Kitchen. She appeared in the Netflix comedy film Yes Day, directed by Miguel Arteta and released in March 2021.

She appeared in The Adam Project in 2022, reunited her with her 13-year-old co-star Mark Ruffalo.

She began filming The Last Thing He Told Me in May 2022 (miniseries). In the forthcoming revival of Starz's Party Down, she is expected to be a series regular.
