Jenna Noelle Ushkowitz (born April 28, 1986) is an American Tony Award-winning producer, actress, singer, and podcast host.
She is best known for her appearances in Broadway musicals such as The King and I and Waitress, as well as in the role of Tina Cohen-Chang in Fox's comedy-drama series Glee.
Early life
Ushkowitz, a South Korean born in Seoul, was born in three months and raised in East Meadow, New York, New York. Judi was a secretary turned housewife, and her father, Brad, was in transportation industry sales. Gregg is her older brother. Her immediate adoptive family is Catholic, while her adoptive paternal grandfather was Jewish. She attended elementary school at the Parkway School in East Meadow, followed by Holy Trinity Diocesan High School, a Catholic school in Hicksville, Long Island. She began working in print advertisements as a young child, beginning with an advertisement for Playskool's Dress Me Up Ernie doll. Ushkowitz appeared in numerous musicals, including the first high school performance of Les Misérables. Ushkowitz, besides her work with the Kindred Foundation, has lobbied for a variety of causes. She appeared with Kevin McHale for the NOH8 campaign in 2012, supporting the repeal of Proposition 8 in California, which had previously banned same-sex marriages. Ushkowitz has worked with NYCLASS and Oceana. Ushkowitz, a long-serving ocean conserver, went to the Channel Islands in summer of 2015 in order to raise concerns about the overfishing of forage fish and its effects on their survival. She hosted the 2015 Nautica Oceana Beach House show the same year. She has tried to raise concerns about the depletion of sea lions in California, which has also been attributed to the overfishing of forage fish.
Ushkowitz revealed her love to David Stanley in August 2020. Ushkowitz, a 3-year-old boy, began appearing on Sesame Street and other children's television shows at age 3. When she was 13 years old, she appeared on Broadway for the first time in The King and I. Ushkowitz's 1996 revival. In the Broadway musical Spring Awakening in 2008, Ushkowitz understudied the roles of Ilse, Anna, Martha, and Thea. Ushkowitz debuted Tina Cohen-Chang on Fox's musical comedy-drama series Glee in 2009. In casting Glee, series creator Ryan Murphy sought out actors who could identify with the commotion of being in theatre roles. He spent three months on Broadway, where he discovered Ushkowitz instead of using traditional television casting calls. Both 2010 and 2011 Ushkowitz performed in live concert tours with her Glee co-stars, with performances taking place in the United States, Canada, England, and Ireland. In 2011, Ushkowitz appeared in Lady Gaga's "Marry the Night" music video for "Marry the Night," portraying Gaga's best friend. Choosing Glee, Ushkowitz' autobiography, was published on May 14, 2013. Ushkowitz' character developed and was accepted into Brown University during Glee's fifth season.
In August 2014, Ushkowitz was cast as Jeannie Ryan in the Hollywood Bowl version of Hair. Ushkowitz was invited by fellow adoptee Samantha Futerman to find Kindred: The Foundation for Adoption, which was established to provide international and domestic adoptionees with services such as travel, translation, and assistance for those who want to reunite. Ushkowitz executive produced Twinsters, a film based on Samantha and Ana's identical twin sisters' separation at birth, in the same spirit that inspired her to create Kindred. At the 2015 South by Southwest premiere, the film premiered. Julia Sullivan, the lead character in a special production of The Wedding Singer at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera in the same year. It was revealed in December 2015 that Ushkowitz had appeared in the film version of the musical Hello Again, alongside Nolan Gerard Funk, Audra McDonald, and Martha Plimpton. With Will Malnati, Ushkowitz co-founded At Will Radio in 2016. Infinitie Positivities, a show hosted by Ushkowitz that includes excerpts from her book Choosing Glee and interviews with people who inspire her, was on display; guests included fellow actors, writers, and experts. Ushkowitz briefly played Dawn Williams from Kimiko Glenn in the Broadway revival of Waitress, beginning on July 29, 2016 and ending on October 19, 2016. She appeared alongside Tracie Thoms and Rachel Dratch in The 24 Hour Plays in Broadway, before a performance on November 14, 2016. She was nominated for her work as the producer of a musical's Best Revival of a Musical last year, Once on This Island.
