Jelena Rozga (born 23 August 1977) is a Croatian pop musician.

Early life

Jelena Rozga was born on August 23, 1977, to mother Marija Rozga, a taylor in Jugoplastika, and father Antonio Rozga in Split, a town in Dalmatia, Croatia. Julija, Rozga's older sister, is the one who hasn't been seen. Rozga, a young and energetic girl, liked to dance and perform in her house. She insisted on becoming a ballet dancer and her parents took her to ballet lessons in the first grade of primary school when she was seven years old. She joined KUD Mozaik under Lepa Smoje, a well-known Croatian choreographer, who was under Lepa Smoje's tutee. She competed in various Yugoslav competitions as a ballet dancer. Rozga was invited to attend the opera house La Scala in Milan at the age of 13. She parents, who could not afford to move abroad, would not allow her to attend. Rozga first enrolled in high school in Split, and after deciding to pursue her passion for dancing, she auditioned to attend the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. Her dancing abilities were astonished by the commission's acceptance. She began performing in various localized productions of Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker among others. Rozga later revealed that the ballet lessons she took as a child "shaped me as a woman [and] gave me order, dedication, and discipline in life."

During a live interview with Croatia's television channel Croatian Music Channel, Rozga revealed that even as a ballet dancer in her youth, she had a deep passion for performing and her aspiration for her career, and that, if she were to pursue a career in music, she would join Croatian pop band Magazin, whose lead singer Ljiljana Nikolovska inspired her. Rozga was also a huge fan of the band, whose songs she knew by heart. Rozga was given an award at a singing competition in 1992 for her performance of "Uvenut ru'marin" (English: The Rosemary Will Wither). In 1994, she appeared in Zvuci Jadrana (English: Sounds of the Adriatic), where she was lauded by Zlatna Gospa for her appearance in Magazin's "You Are the Desire of My Life" (English: You Are the Desire of My Life).
