Jeff Monson Life

Jeffrey William Monson (born January 18, 1971) is an American-Russian mixed martial artist currently competing in the Heavyweight division.

Since 1997, he has competed for the UFC, Strikeforce, PRIDE, M-1 Global, M-1 Global, World Victory Road, and Cage Warriors.

Monson is a two-time champion of the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship and a No Gi Brazilian jiujitsu World Champion, as well as a grappling champion. Monson is anarcho-communist known for his radical left-wing political convictions.

On RT, he is the host of Monson TV.

Early life

Monson was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he also grew up for the bulk of his childhood. He attended Timberline High School and spent time as a Division I wrestler at Oregon State University and the University of Illinois, and was a Pac-10 champion for Oregon. He has also competed at a senior level in USA Wrestling tournaments for a number of years.

Monson earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Illinois and a master's degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he served as the assistant coach of the wrestling team.

He worked as a mental health consultant, as well as a child and family counselor in Lewis County, Washington. However, after seeing a lot of success in Abu Dhabi and other MMA shows, he decided to abandon the mental health profession and devote himself full time to mixed martial arts.

Personal life

Michaela and Josh Monson have two children from his first marriage. Willow, he's a child from his second marriage, has a sister. He now has his fourth child from a Russian woman. Monson is a Christian and has said he prayed to God before every match.

In photographs published in ESPN magazine, Monson painted an anarchy symbol, peace symbol, "no war," and "no hunger" on the Washington State Capitol. Monson pleaded guilty in July 2009 of first-degree criminal mischief.

Mixed martial arts career

Monson was signed by the United FC after 14 straight victories.

Branden Lee Hinkle was killed in the first round of UFC 57, causing a north-south choke. Marcio Cruz, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who has longtime rival), was battling him at UFC 59. Monson fought Tim Sylvia in the UFC Heavyweight Championship on November 18, 2006, at UFC 65. In the hopes of meeting then-PRIDE Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko at a BodogFIGHT scheduled for March 2007, he lost a five-round decision and would later request to be released from his UFC deal. Negotiations did not go well, and the match did not take place during that time.

Monson defeated Kazuyuki Fujita by rear-naked choke submission at 6:37 of the first round of PRIDE 34 on April 8, 2007.

The fight was supposed to be against Chris Guillen on August 17, 2007, but it was cancelled after four of the eight scheduled bouts were cancelled. Monson was defeated at Art of War 3, which was held on September 1, 2007. Monson displayed an enhanced level of striking during the fight and kept the fight alive virtually the entire time.

Monson won two matches in the FILA World Championship in Turkey on September 7, 2007, defeating France's Zoro Piere and England's Tom Blackledge by submission. When Monson's last opponent, Ramon Diaz, sustained an injury and was forced to sit out, he was awarded the 275-pound gold medal.

In the main event of the Mixed Fighting Alliance "There Will Be Blood" tournament, Monson defeated former UFC Heavyweight Champion Ricco Rodriguez. He recovered from a loss to Rodriguez that had been a long time coming.

Monson won a controversial decision against Roy Nelson on Roy Jones Jr.'s hybrid boxing/MMA card "March Badness" on March 21, 2009. On March 29, 2009, he defeated Sergej Maslobojev on a Cage Wars card. He travelled to Japan and defeated top Russian Heavyweight Sergei Kharitonov at Dream 8 on April 5, 2009, giving him three victories in a row.

Monson ended his seven-fight winning streak in a rematch with Pedro Rizzo by unanimous vote on September 12, 2009, at Bitetti Combat MMA 4.

Monson defeated John Brown by a split decision on January 16, 2010.

Monson fought in France at 100% Fight II and defeated Francisco Nonato by submission in the first round. Travis Wiuff was disqualified in a split decision at XKL Evolution 2 on April 24, 2010. He lost in Abu Dhabi to Shamil Abdurahimov by majority vote in the 2010 Openweight Grand Prix's quarterfinals on May 14, 2010.

Monson defeated Bira Lima in Australia on July 10, 2010 by unanimous vote.

On August 21, 2010, Monson met Jason Guida at "Fight Time 1" an event. In the second round, he defeated Jason Guida by a guillotine choke putt.

Neil Wain's next fight was supposed to be against him at "KnuckleUp: Kings of the North," but Neil Wain pulled out of the match due to illness. Dave Keeley, the man who took him out of the fight, was stepping in to replace Wain. In the first round, Monson defeated Keeley by submission (north-south choke).

On November 9, Monson defeated Sergey Shemetov at the inaugural Israel Fighting Championship event. After the match, he said he wanted to drop down to the Light Heavyweight division for his next fight, and his buddy, Ricco Rodriguez, who later won his fight in the main event, said he wanted to face Monson in the International Fighting Championships (IFC) at Light Heavyweight.

In 2011, Monson defeated Lee Mein on January 7 and Tony Lopez on April 1 in a five-round draw.

Monson's next match was against Maro Perak, where he defeated him in a three-round draw.

Monson said that after fighting in April and May, he hoped the UFC would want him back, but this time he would fight in the Light Heavyweight division.

On the June 18 Strikeforce card, Monson stepped in for injured Shane del Rosario to face prospect Daniel Cormier, but the fight came by unanimous decision.

On October 9, 2011, Monson defeated Paul Taylor in Birmingham, England, at the Sprawl n Brawl promotion.

On November 20, 2011, Monson defeated Fedor Emelianenko at M-1 World: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Monson, who lost by a unanimous decision.

After losing to Fedor, Monson was undefeated in his four fights, and the Super Fight League in India has signed a four-fight contract in June 2012. Monson was originally scheduled to compete at SFL 4 on September 29 against former UFC fighter Todd Duffee, but the SFL decided to restructure their shows, with weekly concerts replacing monthly events. Duffee and SFL decided on his resignation in September and are now fighting in the UFC. Following this information, the brawl was called off.

Monson will go 1–6 in seven fights, defeating Denis Komkin and losing to top performers including Alexey Oleynik, Satoshi Ishii, and Mike Hayes from June 2013 to April 2014. Monson defeated Kevin Brooks by north-south choke at Fight Time 20 on August 29, 2014.

At Fight Star: Saransk vs. Penza, Monson met Dmitry Titkov on September 5, 2014. After a cut on Monson, he lost the fight by reduced TKO.

At Fight Star: The Battle of the Sura 2, Monson then met Mikhail Shein. In the second round, he secured the match by rear-naked choke.

On May 6, Monson met Ivan Shtyrkov, the promoter and he decided to do an exhibition match due to Monson's absence from a legitimate MMA match. Shtyrkov was quickly describing it as a real fight, and a few minutes after defeating Monson with a straight right finished him with an armbar on his injured arm.

Monson declared his official retirement from all forms of combat sports, including both MMA and Submission Grappling, on December 12, 2021.
