Jeffrey Allan "Jeff" Anderson (born April 21, 1970) is an American film and television actor, producer, and screenwriter best known for his role in Clerks and Clerks II.
In between, he has appeared in other Kevin Smith-directed films, has produced, directed, and appeared in Now You Know.
Early life
Anderson, a Connecticut native who was raised in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, and his pal, aspiring writer Kevin Smith, graduated in 1988.
Smith was filming on his debut movie Clerks when Anderson was at AT&T. Anderson auditioned for "Jay" as a joke, and Smith later offered Anderson a lead role as video store employee Randal Graves, a foul-mouthed slacker who patronized, raged, and ridiculed his clients while avoiding any real employment opportunities.
Career
Anderson was nominated for the Best Debut Achievement award for his work in Clerks.
Now You Know was written, directed, and starred in Anderson's 2002 film Now You Know. The writing process took only three months. Anderson was nominated for Best Male Performance at the Chicago Film Festival for his role in Love 101, and he appeared in Peter Bergstrom's Something Cool. Anderson also established his own production company in Hollywood. Anderson played Randal in Clerks II in 2006.
Anderson appeared in Kevin Smith's romantic comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno as Deacon, cameraman and film editor for the porno made by top actress Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks in 2008.
Anderson appeared on Smith's SModcast #134 on September 14, 2010. Anderson said in his podcast that he had migrated from Los Angeles to a "retirement community in the mountains," where he is "the youngest person there by 20 years." He remarried in 2009 to Barbara Jacques, an actress he encountered while house sitting for Kevin Smith.
In April 2017, it was announced that production on the awaited sequel Clerks III had halted as Anderson was not interested in appearing in the Kevin Smith-directed film. Despite the fact that an $8 million budget had been obtained, locations were being investigated in Philadelphia, and a crew was being assembled, Anderson decided not to participate in the production process because it was not public knowledge. Smith said he did not recast the role and that film development was suspended indefinitely. Clerks III was happening on October 1, 2019, Smith revealed on Instagram, and Jeff Anderson promised to reprise his position as Randal. "It'll be a film that brings an end to a saga," says the director. It'll be a film about how you're never too old to fully change your life. It'll be a film about how a decades-long friendship finally confronts the future. It'll be a film that brings us right back to the beginning — a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of #newjersey. Jeff and Brian O'Halloran will appear in the film, with me and Jay in supporting roles.
