Jeanette Aw Ee-Ping (born 28 June 1979), better known by her stage name Ou Xuan (), is a Singaporean actor, director, businesswoman, and writer. Aw was ranked as one of the Seven Princesses of Mediacorp in 2006, after which she found greater fame in her leading role in the celebrated drama The Little Nyonya. She was a full-time Mediacorp artiste from 2002 to 2017, but she still films on ad-hoc basis and was recently under Hype Records. Aw has a reputation as one of Singapore's most popular and high-profile celebrities. She has received 29 popularity and performance awards, the most for a performer at Singapore Mediacorp's Star Awards. Aw has written two books; Jeanette Aw: definitions in 2012 and Sol's World: Somebody to Love in 2015. In 2015, she appeared in musical Beauty World for the first time.

Aw began competing in Route to Glamour, a television talent scouting competition in which she finished first. She signed on with SPH Mediaworks and made her acting debut in the 2001 drama Touched. In 2002, Aw joined Mediacorp and portrayed the intellectually challenged character Mo Jingjing in Holland V (2003). In The Dream Makers (2013) and its sequel, Aw received critical praise for portraying flawed actress Zhao Fei Er. For her role in the upcoming film, she received her first Best Actress award at the Star Awards.

Aw is set to open Once Upon A Time, a pastry shop that is located on Jalan Besar's Hamilton Road.

Early life

Aw was born in Singapore as a Hokkien with ancestry from Quanzhou, China. She has an elder sister and an elder brother. Aw seldom used Mandarin in their conversations as a descendent of an English-speaking family. She considered her childhood happy and fortunate because her parents provided her with everything she needed. She was "the kind of girl who loved reading, writing, and drawing" as she grew up with a carefree attitude. Aw wanted to be a dancer, an artist, or a child psychologist.

Aw was a primary school prefect and a model student at Raffles Girls' Primary School, Crescent Girls' School, National Junior College, and National University of Singapore. Her best subjects were English Literature and English Literature, and she received an A for art at O Levels. In primary school, dance in secondary school, and swimming in junior college, Aw performed gymnastics. She began ballet lessons at 13 years old, and Aw began to dance almost every day until she signed her first acting contract. She also played the saxophone in her secondary school concert band and trained for a girls club in junior college. Aw was President of the NUS Dance Ensemble while studying at university. Aw planned to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) Degree in Theatre Studies, despite the fact that she was considering a major in child psychology due to her passion for children.

Acting career

Aw and her companions auditioned at theater companies while preparing for her graduation performance in her last year at university (before receiving an invitation for the Honours Degree program). A friend told Aw that a company was looking for actors, but she found out that it was a television station after applying. Aw beat over 5000 applicants to become champion, joining Route to Glamour, a talent search firm in Singapore and Malaysia established by the now defunct television network SPH MediaWorks in 2000. She was named "Best Performer" and "Best Newcomer" in her debut year and co-starred in a Taiwanese television drama. Aw left SPH MediaWorks in early 2002 to finish her studies, joined Hype Records, and then officially signed on as a Mediacorp artist in May 2002. She starred as Fan Keke in Beautiful Connection, the highest-rated Singapore drama in 2002, and received the Best Newcomer award at Star Awards 2002. The Kiss of a Toast II, a Taiwanese idol drama, was also shot by Aw.

In 2003, Aw appeared in True Heroes before going on to play Mo Jingjing, a young woman with low IQ in Holland V. She became well-known for playing the role. Aw was nominated for Best Actress at the 2003 Academy Awards, but she was denied to co-star Chen Liping. Despite this, she received her first "Top ten Most Popular Female Artists" award. Aw was seen as a potential successor to Ah Jie (big sister) fame following his massive success with Holland V. Aw appeared in her first female lead role in Spice Siblings alongside Tay Ping Hui and Cynthia Koh in 2004. She appeared in two dramas after that: A Child's Hope II and The Champion. In January 2007, the Peak of Aw was screened. After saving her boyfriend, she played Zhong Xiao Yang, a ship construction worker who became wheelchair-bound. The drama was shot around the time of Aw's death of her godmother, and although many aspired her for Best Actress at the annual Star Awards, she did not have a return to the nominees list.

Aw spent four months in China filming the Chinese film The Shaolin Warriors in 2008. In Rhythm of Life and Lin Keyi, Chen Xiaorou's mother appeared, and Lin Keyi in The Defining Moment, where she was lauded for her good acting. Then took the lead in Mediacorp's mega-blockbuster film, The Little Nyonya. Several actresses auditioned for the main female lead role for which Aw was chosen. Many viewers believed it was an attempt to boost Aw's television career and earn the Best Actress award for her at the following Star Awards, and Mediacorp's bias against Aw was criticized. Several viewers also believed that the producers intentionally wrote Aw's first role as a mute in an attempt to conceal her poor Mandarin delivery. Producers applauded Aw's work, claiming that she conducted her duties in a professional manner. Members of the audience applauded Aw's dual portrayal of Yamamoto Yueniang and Huang Juxiang (the mother to her main character) on her website. The drama, which was also a huge success, became the most watched Singapore drama in 15 years. Aw gained more followers and was dubbed the third-generation Ah Jie by many. Aw was actually nominated for her third Best Actress at the 2009 Academy Awards, but she lost to Joanne Peh, her co-star. For the third time, Aw was involved in Together with Dai Xiangyu.

In 2010, Aw served as a funeral director in the hopes of changing people's perceptions of her work in New Beginnings. During the filming of the drama, she had overcome a health scare. Despite Aw's loss in the final, she gathered her fourth and fifth Best Actress nominations respectively for Together (2010) and Blockbuster drama Breakout (2011). Aw was supposed to film Absolutely Charming in 2011, but she later joined Destiny in Her Hands in Malaysia, where she sustained a minor facial injury. Aw finished filming for the drama Precious in China in September 2011. She was the main lead role in her role and collaborated with Dai Xiangyu for the fifth time in three years. Chen Liping suffered in the same way at the 2004 Tony Awards, but she was still beaten by her co-star and set the record for most nominations (6) without a win. For the drama, Aw clinched five popularity awards, including "Favourite Female Character" and "Favourite Onscreen Couple." She became the first artiste to win four awards at a single show since the inception of Star Awards, as well as the first to win five awards in a single year. Aw was featured in Channel 8's epic historical drama The Journey: A Voyage, marking her fifth and third collaboration with Elvin Ng and Joanne Peh respectively in 2013. Aw produced the drama, which is now on PPCTV in Cambodia, alongside cast members Ng and Desmond Tan. She appeared in the football-themed drama World at Your Feet and its spin-off, Unexpected Strangers, a telemovie created for Mediacorp's on-demand service Toggle during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In Channel U's drama Let It Go, Aw was a fashionable single blogger best known for baring her break-up experiences and humiliating her exes online in February 2015. At the Star Awards 2015 show 2 with Vivian Lai, she won six awards before being named as one of the Top Ten Most Popular Female Artistes from 2003-2006, 2009-2014 respectively. She appeared in The Journey: Our Homeland in July 2015, making her the first cast member to appear in all three instalments of the trilogy.

Aw would meet Zhao Fei Er in the second time in blockbuster drama The Dream Makers II, the follow-up to the 2013 hit film, was announced in May that year. Even before filming began, Aw's Best Actress Award chances at the following year's Star Awards were highlighted. Aw said that her character will suffer from depression, and she has done some research into depression patients' characteristics and behavior in order to better depict her role. It was announced in March 2017 that Aw will appear in Ramen Teh, a film co-produced by Japan and Singapore, with Seiko Matsuda, Takumi Saito, and Mark Lee. The film debuted in Singapore in July and at the Berlin International Film Festival in February next year. In September 2018, Aw attended a screening at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and its Paris premiere. Ramen Teh's earnings reached $26,149 in Colombia, $9,384 in the Czech Republic, $472,940 in France, and $72,984 in Spain, according to limited reports.

In October 2017, Aw announced that she had departed from both Hype Records and Mediacorp, saying that it was time to move forward. Aw appeared in Till We Meet Again, a drama produced by Wawa Pictures and her first drama since going solo in November 2018. Aw played Tang Xin, the film's villain, and she hinted that it might be her last drama. After the Stars, Aw began filming showbiz-themed drama In July 2019.
