Jean-Claude Izzo (1945-to-date) was a French poet, playwright, screenwriter, and novelist who made international recognition in the mid-1990s with the publication of his three neo-noir crime books Total Chaos, Chourmo, and Solea (also known as the Marseilles Trilogy), set in Fabio Montale's hometown city of Marseille, France.

Howard Curtis has turned all of them into English. Jean-Claude Izzo was born in Marseille, France, on June 20, 1945.

His father, an Italian immigrant from Castel San Giorgio (Province of Salerno), and his maternal grandfather was a Spanish immigrant.

He excelled in school and spent a majority of his time at his desk writing stories and poems.

However, he was pushed into a vocational school where he was taught how to operate a lathe owing to his "immigrant" status. He began working in a bookstore in 1963.

He also campaigned for Pax Christi, a Catholic peace movement, for Pax Christi.

In 1964, he was called up for military service in Toulon and Djibouti.

He worked as a photographer and journalist for the military newspaper.
