Jayne Atkinson (born 18 February 1959) is a British-American actress who has appeared in film, theatre, and television.

Karen Hayes appeared in The Rainmaker and Enchanted April, perhaps best known for her role on 24.

She has appeared on CBS' Criminal Minds as BAU Chief Erin Strauss, the CBS drama Madam Secretary, as United States Vice President Teresa Hurst, and as BAU Secretary of State Catherine Durant in the Netflix political drama House of Cards.

Early life

Atkinson was born in Bournemouth, England, on February 18, 1959. When she was nine years old, her family immigrated to the United States in 1968. She grew up in North Miami Beach, Florida, and graduated from Pine Crest School, where she was voted Homecoming Queen in 1977. She attended Northwestern University (BS Communications, 1981), where she was welcomed as a member of Alpha Chi Omega and a sorority sibling of Laura Innes; and she graduated with an MFA from Yale Drama School in 1985.

Personal life

Atkinson is married to actress Michel Gill, with whom she has one son. Atkinson and Gill appeared together in a 1989 revival of The Heiress at the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven, Connecticut. They were both in House of Cards, but not as a couple: Gill played President Garrett Walker and Atkinson played Secretary of State Catherine Durant.

Career

Atkinson appeared off-Broadway in the production of Bloody Poetry at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 1987 after being in regional theatres. In a revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons, she made her Broadway debut the same year.

She went on to appear in several stage productions, including Henry VIII, Truman, and The Art of Triumph. In 1996, she received a Drama Desk Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role in The Skriker. Atkinson's role in The Rainmaker Company's 1999 production earned her a Tony Award nomination, and her role in Enchanted April earned her another Tony Award nomination, as well as a Drama Desk nomination.

Ruth Condomine appeared in a Broadway revival of No.l Coward's Blithe Spirit, starring Rupert Everett, Christine Ebersole, and Angela Lansbury.

Free Willy, Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home, 12 and Holding, Blank Check, The Village, and Syriana were among her film appearances. A year in the Life, Parenthood, The X-Files, The Order, The Criminal Minds, 24, Gossip Girl and House of Cards, opposite Kevin Spacey and husband Michel Gill, are among her television appearances.
