Jay Rock Life

Johnny Reed McKinzie Jr. (born March 31, 1985), better known by his stage name Jay Rock, is an American rapper and songwriter from Watts, California.

Rock ultimately preferred a life of street crime over a life as a rapper.

Anthony Tiffith, the creator and CEO of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), discovered Rock in 2005 and tagged him to the label.

Rock signed a recording deal with Warner Bros in 2007 with TDE.

Records and Asylum Records followed records, but mergers were unsuccessful and Rock ended up leaving the company shortly after.

Rock first became known for his 2008 commercial debut single "All My Life (In the Ghetto)" which features fellow American rappers Lil Wayne and will.i.am.

Rock is also known as a member of the hip hop supergroup Black Hippy, as well as West Coast rappers and TDE label-mates Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul.

Rock's much-awaited debut studio album, Follow Me Home, was released in July of this year after signing his joint venture with Strange Music.

The album was promoted by the singles "All My Life (In the Ghetto)" and "Hood Gone Love It."

In September 2015, he was released his second studio album, 90059.

The singles "Money Trees Deuce," "Gumbo," and the title track all helped.

Rock's third studio album Redemption was released in June 2018.

He would win a Grammy award for the album's single "King's Dead."

Both three albums have had a wide range of critic and commercial success.

Jay Rock Career

Life and career

On March 31, 1985, Jay Rock was born Johnny Reed McKinzie Jr. In Watts, Los Angeles, California, Rock was raised in the Nickerson Gardens projects. He became a member of the Bounty Hunter Bloods street gang as a youth and attended Locke High School. He was jailed on two occasions during this time due to the region's anti-gang law. After hearing a verse of his, Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith, chief executive officer (CEO) of independent record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), discovered Rock and signed him to his company in 2005. Rock dropped several mixtapes around his neighborhood and on the internet after signing to TDE. Rock was able to land a recording contract with Asylum Records and then a joint venture with Warner Bros. Records in 2007. Jay Rock met fellow labelmate Kendrick Lamar at TDE, and the two of them would travel together on several tours together, honing their craft. Both the two musicians appear on each others' albums, and together with Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q, the supergroup Black Hippy will be formed.

In late 2008, Rock released "All My Life (In the Ghetto), a commercial debut single starring fellow American recording artists Lil Wayne and will.i.am. In early 2009, the single was marketed as one of "iTunes' Free Downloads." Rock was included on the front page of XXL's annual Top Ten Freshmen issue in 2010. He was also named by MTV as one of 2010's top MCs. Jay Rock appeared on Omarion's song "Hoodie" and was supposed to be included on Flo Rida's third studio album Only One Flo, but was left off the final track listing.

On March 28, 2010, Rock's Mixtape Tales From the Hood 2 was released on iTunes, and his remixtape From the Hood to the Cover of XXL was released on iTunes on July 24, 2010. On The Invitation Tour, he performed with 50 Cent and other rappers. He left Warner Bros. because of them delaying his music. After being dropped from Warner Bros, Jay Rock signed with indie music company Strange Music in the fall of 2010, on a multi-album contract. Kutt Calhoun and Kendrick Lamar went on tour with Tech N9ne, E-40, Glasses Malone, Kutt Calhoun, and Kendrick Lamar on the "Independence Grind National Tour" in the fall of 2010. His mixtape Black Friday was announced on December 7, 2010, according to iTunes.

On June 21, 2011, Rock released "Hood Gone Love It," his second single, starring Kendrick Lamar. Follow Me Home, his debut album, was released on July 26, 2011, under the banners of independent record companies Strange Music and Top Dawg. The album debuted on the Billboard 200, with 5,300 copies being sold in its first week. In the character trailer for Franklin, a main protagonist in the video game Grand Theft Auto V, "Hood Gone Love It" was also included in the in-game radio station Radio Los Santos.

Rock performed on BET's Music Matters Tour in 2012 with the rest of Black Hippy and MMG artist Stalley. Rock's appearance on Kendrick Lamar's debut, good kid, m.A.D. city, in October 2012, was highly coveted because he was the only other Black Hippy rapper to be included on the album's standard version. Rock was featured on "Money Trees," for which his verse was highly praised. He'll also appear in the TDE Cypher later this year with the rapper "Money Trees" with Lamar. XXL ranked his verse as the fourth best of the night on record.

Rock told Power 105 that his second studio album would be released in 2014. Rock was nominated for Album of the Year as a featured artist for appearing on Kendrick Lamar's fantastic kid, m.A.D. city, in the 56th annual Grammy Awards nominations. TDE's CEO announced that Jay Rock would be the next artist from the label to debut an album following the release of label-mate Ab-Soul's album These Days... in June 2014.

Rock had left his Strange Music imprint and is now limited to Top Dawg Entertainment, according to Tech N9ne in September 2014. Jay Rock released "Pay for It," a promotional single starring Kendrick Lamar and Chantal Kreviazuk on October 29, 2014. Rock appeared on NBC late-night sketch comedy and variety show Saturday Night Live, alongside musical guest Lamar, where they performed "Pay For It" on November 15, 2014.

According to Top Dawg Entertainment's CEO Anthony Tiffith, Jay Rock was involved in a serious motorcycle crash on February 15, 2016. He recovered well, but he had a lot of broken bones, according to Complex. He was in hospital but made it out of it.

"King's Dead" was released by Jay Rock on January 12, 2018. Future and James Blake appear on the single. Mike Will Made It and Teddy Walton, as the lead single on his third studio album and as a single from Black Panther: The Album, were produced. "King's Dead" became Jay Rock's first song to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100. He released the single "Win" on May 16, 2018, his second single from his third studio album, which was his second single.

The album, titled Redemption, was announced on May 21, 2018, along with the cover art and its release date, which was announced on June 15, 2018.

Both "King's Dead" and "Win" were nominated in the Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song categories at the 2019 Grammy Awards, respectively. In February 2019, Rock received his first Grammy award for his film "King's Dead" in February 2019.
