Jay Manuel (born August 14, 1972) is an American-born Canadian television presenter, Creative Director, and Make-up Artist.

He is most well-known as the former Creative Director of America's Next Top Model, which is a cable television show.

Manuel was also featured as the host of Next Top Model in Canada.Manuel is the founder and CEO of the beauty brand Jay Manuel Beauty.

The brand opened Roosevelt Field Mall in 2017, a joint venture with Simon.

He was one of the judges for Miss Universe 2017 later this year.

Early life

Manuel was born in Springfield, Illinois, to a mother of Italian and Czech descent as well as a South African father of mixed Cape Malay descent. He was born in Toronto by adoptive parents, who attended Dr. Bethune Collegiate Institute and York University. Manuel was a pre-med student and also studied opera before entering the fashion industry.

Personal life

Jay is openly gay. Though he is private about his intimate life, he continues to campaign for LGBTQ rights. He made a "It Gets Better" video in 2011 to inspire LGBTQ people.

Career

For seven years, he has worked in "the art of managing to aesthetic." He has worked as a makeup artist and stylist for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, Victoria's Secret, Revlon, and CoverGirl. Manuel has worked with renowned fashion photographers such as Herb Ritts, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Francesco Scavullo. He has worked as a makeup artist and stylist to celebrities like Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Iman, Rupert Everett, Bridget Moynahan, M.A. Khada Bassett, M.A. Keith LaBelle, Patti LaBelle, Rossario Dawson, Pink, David Bowie, and Jennifer Lopez.

In 2003, Manuel joined Next Top Model in the United States as the Creative Director in its first cycle. Manuel appeared on every cycle of the show for nine years, making it one of the country's biggest shows during this period. Nigel Barker and J. Alexander did not return for the 19th cycle after 18 years on the show, as their contracts were not renewed. Manuel opted to leave the show following the announcement. Manuel and the show were entangled in a media frenzy as a result of Tyra Banks' controversial move. The radical staff change didn't work and the show was cancelled three years later, but it was revived on December 12, 2016 on VH1.

Manuel was the host and lead judge of Canada's second and third cycles of Next Top Model, a spin-off to ANTM. He made a cameo appearance in Degrassi Takes Manhattan, as well as playing himself in an episode of the comedy-drama television show Being Erica.

Attitude, Manuel's clothing collection for Sears Canada, was released in 2011. Manuel introduced Jay Manuel Beauty, a luxury line of cosmetics based on a new Filter Finish Collection manufacturing process, in 2014. In early 2017, Manuel was announced as a judge for the Miss Universe 2017 beauty pageant. At the Las Vegas, Nevada, he was one of the six final judges crowned Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters as Miss Universe 2017.
