Early life
Manuel was born in Springfield, Illinois, to a mother of Italian and Czech descent as well as a South African father of mixed Cape Malay descent. He was born in Toronto by adoptive parents, who attended Dr. Bethune Collegiate Institute and York University. Manuel was a pre-med student and also studied opera before entering the fashion industry.

Manuel has worked with renowned fashion photographers such as Herb Ritts, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Francesco Scavullo. In 2003, Manuel joined Next Top Model in the United States as the Creative Director in its first cycle. Manuel appeared on every cycle of the show for nine years, making it one of the country's biggest shows during this period. Nigel Barker and J. Alexander did not return for the 19th cycle after 18 years on the show, as their contracts were not renewed. Manuel opted to leave the show following the announcement. Manuel and the show were entangled in a media frenzy as a result of Tyra Banks' controversial move.
