Jay Feely Career

College career

Feely served as a four-year letterman at the University of Michigan from 1995 to 1998. He converted 17 of 22 field goal attempts and 40 of 41 of 41 point-after attempts on his way to a mention in the All-Big Ten team as a senior in 1998. As a youth, he made his longest field goal, a 51-yard kick against Baylor. He finished his career 20-for-26 in field goals and 43-for-44 in extra points.

Professional career

Feely was traded for the Florida Bobcats of the Arena Football League after going undrafted in the 1999 NFL Draft. He went 2-for-5 in field goal attempts and 8-for-13 in extra point attempts during the season. He had three tackles (two solo) and forced a fumble.

In 2000, feels got off for the Tampa Bay Storm, winning one of six field goal attempts and three of four extra point attempts. He had a 22-yard kickoff.

Feely played out for the Washington Redskins in March 2001, but was not signed. He signed a one-year, $209,000 deal with the Atlanta Falcons on April 12. Despite Jake Arians' expectation to be the Falcons' placekicker during the 2001 season, Feely gained the job.

Feely converted 29 of 37 field goal attempts (78.4%) and all 28 extra point attempts as a rookie with the Falcons in 2001. He converted 14 of 15 field goals away from the Georgia Dome. His 115 points ranked him second in the NFC after only Rams kicker Jeff Wilkins tied him for second, second behind only Eagles' David Akers for second. On September 30, Feely converted a 55-yarder against the Arizona Cardinals. On a fake field goal try, he got one pass from Falcons punter Chris Mohr for -2 yards on a fake field goal attempt. Feely was a consensus all-rookie pick for his season.

Feely, the Falcons' exclusive-rights free agent in the 2002 offseason, was given a one-year, $300,000 deal on February 22. On June 7, he agreed to the agreement. He converted 32 of 40 field goal attempts (80 percent), but just one of 43 extra points attempted. His 32 field goals tied him to Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Martn Gramática for the most games in the NFL. Morten Andersen's previous franchise record of 31 was also broken in 1995. Feely received NFL Special Teams Player of the Week honors for converting three field goals of more than 40 yards against the Carolina Panthers on October 20, and then NFC Special Teams Player of the Month honors for converting 9 of ten field goals and all nine points after touchdowns. Feely converted 19 of 27 field goal attempts (70.4 percent) and 32 of 33 additional point attempts in 2003.

Feely, a restricted free agent, was re-signed by the Falcons on March 6, 2004, worth $628,000. He had a 78.3 percent field goal percentage by converting 18 of 23 attempts in the previous year. He made it on all 40 of his extra point attempts this season. He recovered his own onside kick against the St. Louis Rams on September 19. Feely was a perfect 2-for-2 in field goals and 7-for-7 on PATs in two playoff games.

Feely, an unrestricted free agent in the 2005 offseason, has signed a three-year contract with the New York Giants. Base salaries of $540,000 (2005), $545,000 (2006), and $550,000 (2007) were included in the deal. Feely scored all his team's points in a 15–14 victory over the New York Jets this year by connecting on five field goals, two over 50 yards. However, Feely failed to connect on three potential game-winning field goals in week 12 in 2005, and the Giants lost 24-21, despite compiling 490 yards total offense. The Giants lost to Carolina in a wild-card playoff match. Feely set a new York Giants franchise record for the highest field goal percentage in over a two-year period. He had an 83% success and an 85-year with the Giants.

On March 8, the Miami Dolphins agreed to Feely's three-year deal worth less than $5 million as a free agent in the 2007 offseason. Olindo Mare, the team's placekicker, was then traded to the New Orleans Saints on April 3.

During his first season with the Dolphins, he had his best season in his career and franchise history. He missed just two of his 23 field goal attempts, setting a new franchise record for field goal percentages at 91.3. By Mare in 2001, the record had already been 90.5 percent. Feely had converted 164 straight extra point kicks and had five recovered onside kicks during the 2007 season.

During the 2008 offseason, it was revealed that new Dolphins Vice President Bill Parcells did not like Feely's outspoken nature and that he would not be guaranteed a roster spot despite his 2007 success. On June 6, the Dolphins cut fellow kicker Dave Rayner, leaving only undrafted rookie Dan Carpenter (Montana) to challenge Feely for the team's placekicking job in 2008. He was released by the Dolphins on August 12, 2008.

Feely was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs on August 25, 2008, and released one day later.

Mike Nugent, the team's Week 1 match against the Miami Dolphins, was hospitalized, but they signed Feely on September 8, 2008. Feely kicked a game-winning 34-yard field goal against the New England Patriots in overtime; the Jets claimed first position in the AFC East for the first time since November 19, 2001.

Feely had made 16 of his 20 field goal attempts (80.0%), with an average of 35.1 yards and a long of 55 yards, and converted all 23 PATs for a total of 71 points. Feely started working out his upper body five days a week in the Jets' new training center, saying, "I work out hard in the weight room so I don't get injured." His workouts were mainly focusing on deadlifts.

Feely re-signed a one-year deal with the Jets on March 4, 2009.

Feely scored 23 straight field goals against the Buffalo Bills in Week Six of the 2009 season, his first appearance. However, he missed his second attempt in the second quarter, raising the team's record at 24.

Feely went 0–2 in field goal attempts on December 21, 2009. As the Jets lost to the Atlanta Falcons 10-7, he "shanked" a 38-yard try and had a 37-yarder blocked. When Feely was unexpectedly called into service after his colleague Steve Weatherford was sidelined with an irregular heartbeat in a playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 9, 2010, he made his first career punt.

On April 2, 2010, Feely signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Feely was just the fourth kicker in 40 years to play for a touchdown against the Denver Broncos on December 12, 2010. In the game, Feely kicked a career-high five field goals. Feely scored 25 points in the game, the most points scored by a player in a single game since October 21, 2007, when Rob Bironas scored 26 against the Houston Texans. Feely kicked a 48-yard field goal for a win over the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Day in 2010. Feely scored a 61-yard field goal against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6 on October 14, 2012, setting a new career record. However, his 38-yard field goal attempt was deflected with 3 seconds left in the fourth quarter, when the Cardinals lost 16–19 in overtime. Feely re-signed with the Cardinals for the 2014 season. Feely was released by the Cardinals on August 25, 2014.

Robbie Gould's injury cover for the Dallas Cowboys came as the Chicago Bears signed Feely on December 3, 2014 as injury cover. Feely appeared in the Chicago Bears' remaining four games of the season, three of which were at Soldier Field.
