Jaxson Reed Hayes (born May 23, 2000) is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns.

Personal life

Jonathan Hayes' father played in the National Football League (NFL) and was the head coach of the XFL's St. Louis BattleHawks. Kristi (Kinne) starred basketball at Drake University (1991-95) and received honorable mention for Kodak All-American accolades and Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year awards as a senior (1994–95). During her four years (1987–91) at Jefferson-Scranton High School in Jefferson, Iowa, she earned 3,406 career points. She spent her time as an assistant women's basketball coach at Oklahoma, Iowa, and Southern Illinois-Carbondale. Jillian, a varsity basketball player at Loveland High School who committed to playing basketball at the University of Cincinnati, Jewett, and Jonah, is one of Hayes' three siblings.

Hayes was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department on July 28, 2021, and the department denied arrest. Officers were looking at a radio call that involved a domestic feud between Hayes and his mother. Before being arrested, Hayes shoved an officer into a wall and was treated for minor injuries.

Jaxson Hayes Career

High school career

Hayes attended Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a senior, he went from six foot to 6'11" tall. He participated in the Junior International Tournament (JIT), in Lissone, Italy, winning Team Ohio's fifth title in 2018. He averaged 12 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks per game as a senior. He enrolled in college basketball at the University of Texas.

College career

Hayes averaged 10.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game as a freshman at Texas, despite shooting 78% from the field. In a 69-56 loss to TCU, he scored a career-high 19 points, seven boards, two robbers, and a block. In a loss to Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament, Hayes sustained his left knee. He was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year. Hayes registered for the NBA draft on April 11, 2019, putting him out of service for the remaining three years.

Professional career

The Atlanta Hawks selected Hayes with the 8th overall pick of the 2019 NBA draft on June 20, 2019, along with the draft rights to Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Didi Louzada's draft rights, as well as a heavily protected 2020 first round pick for De'Andre Hunter and veteran wing Solomon Hill. On July 7, the trade was officially concluded. Hayes appeared on his NBA debut with the Pelicans on October 10, 2019, scoring 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting against the Golden State Warriors in an 11 point loss. In a 108-100 victory over the Golden State Warriors on November 17, he made his first appearance in place of the injured Derrick Favors. Hayes recorded his second NBA double-double on January 9, 2020, scoring 14 points and adding 12 rebounds to go along with 4 blocks in less than 24 minutes of play. Hayes dominated the New York Knicks for the first time in his NBA career, posting 18 points and ten rebounds. Hayes finished with a 40-point loss to the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night, with a then career-high 20 points.

Hayes scored a season-high 19 points in a 107-109 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on May 7, 2021. He matched this figure against the Golden State Warriors in a 122-125 loss on May 14.
