He appeared on the Australian soap Neighbours as Scott Robinson before starting a career in music in 1988.

He has sold more than 3 million copies in the United Kingdom.

Ten Good Reasons, the artist's debut album, was the most well-selling album in the United Kingdom in 1989, with sales of over 1.5 million.

He has had four No. 1s in the United Kingdom. One singles, one of which was "Especially for You," his 1988 duet with fellow Neighbours co-star Kylie Minogue, was one of the dozens.

He has appeared in several stage musicals, most notable in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the early 1990s. Born in Australia, he now lives in London, England.

Early life

Jason Donovan was born in Melbourne, Victoria, on June 1st, 1968. He is the son of Australian actress Sue McIntosh (née Menlove) and British-born veteran stage and television actor Terence Donovan (who also appeared in Neighbours) with English and Irish roots. Following his parents' separation and divorce, his father was granted full custody of him in 1973 and took him up on his own. Since the divorce, Donovan hasn't seen his mother again. He attended De La Salle College Malvern.

Personal life

Donovan is married to Angela Malloch, with whom he has three children. They live in West London and Oxfordshire. Stephanie McIntosh, a former Neighbours actor, is Donovan's half-sister. Despite being estranged from his mother, he is close to his maternal grandmother and other relatives.

Donovan was the focus of an episode of BBC TV's Who Do You Think You Are? On the 30th of August 2010, he discovered he is a descendant of pioneer William Cox, who built the first road across Australia's Blue Mountains in 1814. Donovan revealed that he is Jewish through his maternal grandmother, Eileen Dawson (née Lyons).

Jason Donovan Career

Career

In 1980, Donovan appeared on television for the first time as a guest on the Australian television show Skyways. Future Neighbours co-star Kylie Minogue played his on-screen sister in the episode. He appeared in the film I Can Jump Puddles (1981) and Golden Pennies (1985) before joining Neighbours in 1986 as Scott Robinson (replacing actor Darius Perkins, who had been in the role for the first year of the series). Charlene Mitchell's on-screen romance and wedding arc helped the show's success in Britain as well as Australian audiences.

In 1987, he received his first Logie Award for "Best New Talent" and the Television Society of Australia's "Perspective by a Male Actor in a Series." He was given the Silver Logie in 1988 for the "Most Popular Actor" on Australian television.

Donovan appeared in The Heroes, the 1988 Australian World War II mini-series based on Ronald McKie's historical novel, in addition to his regular role in Neighbours. He received the 1990 Logie Award for "Most Popular Actor in a Mini-Series."

In 1989, Donovan left Neighbours for Neighbours. He said he had been invited to return to tie in with the show's 25th anniversary in 2010, but was unable to do so due to other commitments.

Although he was still playing in Neighbours, Donovan joined Minogue (who had already dropped the series by this time) in signing a recording deal with Mushroom Records in Australia and PWL in the United Kingdom. Despite the fact that Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW)'s production team initially refused to work with Donovan, fearing that doing with a second Neighbours celebrity would be "too tacky," the trio rushed to him, recording his first song, "Nothing Can Divide Us" after Rick Astley's disapproving it. The track was first introduced in 1988 in the United Kingdom and Australia, at number five in the United Kingdom and number three in Australia.

"Especially for You," Donovan's next album, a duet with Minogue, was released in late November 1988. Although SAW, who felt it was too commercial, changed their minds when Woolworths ordered 250,000 copies of the record. After four weeks at No. 1, I've been away from home for four weeks. It reached No. 2 in the United Kingdom, when it reached No. 2. In January 1989, there was no 1 on the market. In 1988, it was the fourth-highest-selling single in the United Kingdom and the 17th in Australia for 1989. The track became SAW's biggest ever hit in the United Kingdom, selling in excess of one million copies. Minogue and Donovan were on the front cover of the UK pop magazine Smash Hits to advertise the fact that the issue has sold one million copies. Donovan's trademark Neighbours mullet was discarded for a modern undercut, and the song was accompanied by a significant image change.

In March 1989, his second album, "Too Many Broken Hearts," debuted at number one in the United Kingdom. In May 1989, he released Ten Good Reasons, his debut album, which also topped the charts (for three weeks). Donovan's next single, a cover of Brian Hyland's "Sealed With a Kiss," debuted at number one on the charts and the albums chart for two weeks.

He appeared on "Do They Know It's Christmas" in December 1989, which also included Minogue, whose departure from Neighbours was shown on screen in Australia and the United Kingdom. His own departure from the show had been broadcast on Australian television by this time, but it wasn't until many months later that it was broadcast on British television.

In May 1990, Donovan's second album, Between The Lines, was released by Stock Aitken Waterman. Despite the fact that the album reached Platinum status in the United Kingdom, it was less successful than his debut a year ago, peaking at no. The 2nd edition of the magazine was only available in half as many copies as the others. Five singles were removed from the album, and although they all made it to the UK Top 30, they also showed a decline in his fame. Donovan achieved 16 Top 40 hit singles in the United Kingdom between 1988 and 1992.

In 1990, he began his "Doin' Fine Tour," which culminated in a world tour. It covered the United Kingdom, Ireland, mainland Europe, Australia, Singapore, and other parts of South East Asia. In 1990, the Dublin concert was shot and released on VHS; in 2010, it was republished on DVD.

Donovan continued to perform alongside his pop career, and in 1990, he appeared in his first feature film, Blood Oath (in some countries as Prisoners of the Sun).

Donovan was given the lead role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a resurgent London Palladium production directed by Steven Pimlott, in 1991. Donovan's third solo No. 1 in the United Kingdom appeared on television. "Any Dream Will Do" is a single by one of the company's songs. Donovan's involvement in early 1992 sparked in the industry.

Donovan took libel action against The Face magazine, which had published allegations that he was homosexual in 1992. Donovan recovered £200,000 in costs, but the magazine had to pay a further £100,000 in fees, but the case sparked backlash from people accusing him of being homophobic. Despite being a light drug user who had smoked cannabis joints up to this point, Donovan began using cocaine in the months after his libel complaint was brought. Donovan said that suing The Face was the biggest mistake of his life in a 2007 Marie Claire interview and also in his 2007 autobiography Between The Lines: My Story Uncut.

Donovan's third album, All Around The World (1993), was released by Polydor Records. However, the album was ineffective, failing to make it to the UK Top 20 and wasn't released in Australia at all. His deal with Polydor was not extended, and it would be Donovan's last album for 15 years.

Donovan later admitted that he had a serious drug problem by 1995, taking around three grams of cocaine a day. He attended model Kate Moss' 21st birthday party at The Viper Room in Los Angeles, where he died from a heroin overdose in early 1995.

Donovan appeared in the Australian television film The Last Bullet, directed by Michael Pattison, set in World War II on the Pacific island of Borneo.

Donovan played Dr. Frank N. Furter in The Rocky Horror Show's UK touring production, where he met stage manager Angela Malloch. Malloch had a brief romance with Donovan and told him that if he wanted to be a part of their child's life, he would have to kick drugs once and for all.

Donovan said in late 1999 that he still used cocaine, "I still have a joint and I still take coke, but not as much as I did two years ago." In 2011, he said he had been drug-free since 2000, the year his first child was born.

Jemma, Donovan's daughter, was born in March 2000. Since then, with his heroin use now under surveillance, he continued to act on stage and television and appeared in MDA's medical-legal television drama MDA (2003–05), on Australia's ABC network. Donovan has also contributed to the Buzz since 2003. A collection of quiz video games.

He appeared on 3 March 2005 in his first appearance, but was later invited from June to participate in the final two months of the exhibition before its closure on September 4th, 2005. Since this, he has toured the United Kingdom and returned to the stage in January 2006 to star in a UK tour of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. He returned to Melbourne to appear in David Eldrige's Australian transfer of the London drama Festen.

Thanks to an image that was taken in Sydney, Donovan's cellphone number was distributed on the internet in Australia in 2005. Donovan was trying to sell his car, and the public was unintentionally given his mobile phone number. His answering machine had a special message from September 10th because he was annoyed by the number of calls he was getting. Virgin placed advertisements in several Australian newspapers, urging people not to call Donovan, one of their clients. The photographs were later revealed to be part of a marketing tactic, according to Virgin Mobile.
