During her youth, she bounced back and forth between the United States and Panama. When she was 12, her family moved to Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

Bravo studied at the Playwrights Horizons Theater School of the Arts in New York City, where she concentrated on acting and design for theater, which also included costume and set design.

Janicza Bravo Career

Career

Bravo spent time as a stylist and wardrobe designer after graduating from college.

Bravo got off to write and directing a number of short films. Katherine Waterston and Brett Gelman appeared in Eat, her first film, at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival, and Vice was chosen up by Vice. The film told the tale of a woman who is locked out of her apartment and meets an odd neighbor.

Michael Cera's second film, the 2013 dark comedy named Gregory Go Boom, received the Sundance Film Festival's short-film jury award and portrayed her as a tyrant who lives near the Salton Sea. The film was shot on location in Bombay Beach and Slab City, California. Bravo produced and released the film online in association with JASH. The film's name was inspired by the 1976 François Truffaut film Small Change, in which the boy is thrown out the window but nevertheless survives.

Gaby Hoffmann appears in her third short film, 2014's Pauline Alone, as a Craigslist-obsessed woman. In 2014, she was named one of the "25 New Faces of Independent Film" by a filmmaker magazine.

"Vivitoria Beckham Is Living a Life Filled with Style and Grace" was Bravo's 25th Anniversary Women of the Year Awards on Victoria Beckham in 2015.

In 2016, Bravo introduced Hard World for Small Things, a live-action virtual reality film that was a "day in the life" recreation of South Central. Eve Cohen and James Kaelan of Seed and Spark funded the initiative. The film was inspired by the death of a cousin, who was visiting Panama in the summer of 1999, and was a case of mistaken identity. It was shot using GoPro cameras for the virtual reality business Wevr, and it was on display at the Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, and the AFI Festival Los Angeles. The film's title was inspired by a line of dialogue in 1955 film noir film The Night of the Hunter, and it marked a significant departure in theme as it emphasized race and politics.

Woman in Deep, a short film by Bravo in 2016, was also on display at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival. Alison Pill and the film was made grant-funded by The Nantucket Project.

Bravo produced and co-wrote Zola, Bravo's most recent film, as well as playwright Jeremy O. Harris. The film is based on a 148-tweet thread by Detroit waitress Aziah "Zola" Wells about a trip she took to Florida with a sex worker named Jessica. Zola made its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.
