Life and career

Rube was born in Volyn, Czechoslovakia, to Ruena (née Kellnerová) and Jan Rube. He graduated from the Prague Conservatoire and joined the Prague Opera House as a bass singer only after World War II. He won the first prize at the Geneva International Music Festival in 1948 and migrated to Canada at the end of the year to pursue a career in a broader field. He began as a touring singer with the Canadian Opera Company and later became a tour guide and producer before moving to radio and television, where he became well-known as an actor and host in Canada. In Peter Weir's big-market film Witness and Jan in D2: The Mighty Ducks, he is best known for his portrayal of Amish patriarch Eli Lapp.
