Jamie Hewlett Life

Jamie Christopher Hewlett (born 3 April 1968) is an English comic creator, animator, designer, and artist, best known for his contributions to the comic book Tank Girl and the Gorillaz virtual band.

Early life

Jamie Hewlett, a pupil at Tanbridge House School, a local co-educational institution that caters for pupils aged 11–16 years, was brought up in Horsham, West Sussex. He contributed to the art of a road safety campaign that culminated in him finishing runner-up in a national television competition. He was inspired by the punk band The Undertones. Hewlett's first comic strip book "One Boring Day" was released as a teenager. He was the youngest person to work in Oscar Award-winning animator Bob Godfrey's Wardour Street studios in 1983. Hewlett created the original artwork for a Thames Television animated cartoon series starring Bob Godfrey, with voiceovers by Peter Hawkins, the voice of Bill & Ben. "Amber, Bovver, and Bounce" on television never appeared as sufficient funds were not raised to make the first twenty-five episodes.

Hewlett, Alan Martin, and fellow student Philip Bond created Atomtan, a fanzine that was released while studying at Northbrook College Worthing. Brett Ewins was attracted to him as a result of his curiosity. Hewlett and Martin were invited by Ewins to produce articles for a new magazine that was starting up with Steve Dillon in 1988.

The magazine was titled Deadline and featured a collection of comic strips created by British artists as well as essays on music and culture. Martin and Hewlett created Tank Girl, anarchic strip about a teenage punk girl who rode a tank and had a mutant kangaroo for a boyfriend. The strip became immediately renowned and quickly became the most talked-about part of Deadline. Hewlett's eccentric style was well-received, and he began to work with bands Senseless Things and Cud providing cover for record albums; he also contributed artwork to Commodore User magazine.

In Chatsworth Road, Worthing, he created decor for The Factory, a nightclub. The decor included red and green stripes, a wall of blown-up panels from Tank Girl set against 1970s wallpaper, a Ford Escort hung from the ceiling, and toilets pasted with pages from old comic book annuals. Since being renovated and renamed several times, the factory has been renamed several times.

Hewlett had established himself as a leading comics designer in 1992, becoming one of the few people to break into mainstream media by 1992. In 2000 AD issues 700 to 707. He had worked with writer Peter Milligan on Hewligan's Haircut. The sequence was later turned into a trade paperback. Shade, the Changing Man, was also written by Milligan for DC Comics, and he was instrumental in providing covers and art for it.

After being considered by, among others, Steven Spielberg, Tank Girl was selected to be made into a MGM film. Lori Petty was the protagonist of the film "British Girl" when it was first released in 1995. It was a commercial and critical loss, and fans complained that it failed to capture the essence of the original strip's essence. Hewlett had no involvement in the film.

For the Vertigo imprint of DC Comics written by Peter Milligan, Hewlett created a Tank Girl mini-series.

He opened a secondhand clothing store in 49. Jane Oliver, a native of Elastica, ran the store at 49 Rowlands Road, Worthing, but it was short-lived and closed within a year.

Hewlett was also active in British bands of the 1990s, including drawing a comic stripe-based Pulp's "Common People."

In 1996, the deadline was postponed due to declining sales in a new environment, and Hewlett concentrated on television advertising and graphics, most notably Ant & Dec's children's series SMTV Live, which featured Ant & Dec. He also created Get the Freebies, which was also published in The Face, a British fashion magazine. The stories, set in London, followed Terry Phoo, a gay, Buddhist kung-fu law enforcement officer and his sidekick Whitey Action, an enigmatic young anarchist with a bad attitude, as they meet their primary rivals, the Freebies Gang. With the female protagonist's perspective in mind, the dynamic between the two heroes was very similar to that of Tank Girl and her mutant kangaroo boyfriend Booga. Hewlett's main purpose was for him to scream against the media idols and trends of the day, with the tale often taking second place to the jokes.

After Hewlett's split with Oliver, he had migrated to a Flat with Blur's Damon Albarn, and it was while sharing the apartment that the pair first considered Gorillaz, a virtual band. Albarn will work on the music, while Hewlett will come up with character sketches, and both came up with concepts for the members of the band. In 2000, the first Gorillaz EP was released, followed by Gorillaz' first album in 2001. Demon Days was the artist's second complete studio album on record.

Hewlett's artwork for Gorillaz was shortlisted for the Design Museum's Designer of the Year award in January 2006. He was named Designer of the Year 2006 in May 2006. Hewlett and Albarn received the joint award for Songwriters of the Year at the Ivor Novello Awards on May 25th.

Hewlett and Albarn's first major work since Gorillaz, Monkey: Journey to the West, a re-working of the ancient Chinese legend Journey to the West, was released in 2007. Albarn wrote the score, while Hewlett created the set, animations, and costumes. The performance was written and adapted by Chen Shi-zheng and featured 45 Chinese circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and Chinese vocalists. On the 28th of June 2007, it premiered at the Palace Theatre in Manchester as part of the Manchester International Festival.

BBC Three's Get the Freebies strip was adapted for a pilot called Phoo Action, which was broadcast in February 2008.

The animation sequence that was used by Hewlett and Albarn to announce Beijing 2008 Olympics coverage was used by the BBC. The Monkey character from Monkey: Journey to the West appears in the sequence titled Journey to the East.

On September 10, 2011, he married French presenter and actress Emma de Caunes at Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

A 2014 Kickstarter campaign raised the capital for a new Tank Girl book starring Hewlett and Martin, as well as other artists, such as Brett Parson, Warwick Johnson-Cadwell, Jim Mahfood, Craig Knowles, and Jonathan Edwards.

Hewlett opened his first art show The Suggestionists at London's Saatchi Gallery in November 2015. In May 2016, the exhibition made its American debut at the Woodward Gallery in Manhattan.

Who is Banksy? From ex-public school boy to Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja…and now a builder from Finsbury Park: The convincing (and not so convincing) theories about elusive street artist's true identity

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 25, 2024
The artist behind the paintings is one of the world's most closely guarded secrets, but that hasn't deterred people from speculating. Fans were taken aback when a man photographed outside a new mural on Hornsey Road in Finsbury Park, north London, turned out not to be a builder who claimed to be not even a fan of the mural. Originally believed to be Robin Gunningham, a former public schoolboy from Bristol whose connection to Banksy was first revealed by a Mail On Sunday investigation in 2008, the builder today revealed himself as 67-year-old George Giorgiou. Alex Georgiou, the building's landlord who previously spoke to MailOnline about his plans for the residence, admitted himself to be his father.

The'street art' auction in Los Angeles featured Banksy's Police Van Chimp and Crazy Horse, grossing nearly $1 million

The exhibition, hosted by Julien's Auctions, featured 20 famous works by street artists, including Banksy, Invader, and RETNA. The auction took place in Los Angeles on Thursday in front of a live audience, but hundreds of bidders and collectors from around the world participated online. The grand total came close to a whopping $900,000, with the majority of pieces doubling the estimate of the predicted bids. The 'Police Van Chimp' stencil painting by Banksy sold for $222,250, double the original estimate and the most expensive of the night.

After a £250,000 stop sign art was'stolen' from Peckham street in broad daylight, 'banksy bandit' suspects were re-bailed

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 17, 2024
Both men have been arrested as a result of further probes and will have to return to a London police station in mid-March. On December 22, a stop sign carrying three military drones appeared at the junction of Commercial Way in Peckham. But it was chopped off with bolt cutters just an hour after the underground artist had officially announced it on December 23. According to the Met, one man, aged in his 20s, was arrested on the day it was discovered, and a second man, who was in his 40s, was arrested the next day.
