Jamie Dornan Career

Initial career

Dornan was a member of Sons of Jim before it disbanded in 2008. He formed the band with his schoolmate David Alexander and established their own record label Doorstep Records, on which they released their songs "Fairytale" and "My Burning Sun." On tour, Jim's sons sponsored Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall.

Dornan was not keen to pursue modelling as a career, but his stepmother and siblings cautioned him not to pursue modeling as a career. Model Behaviour, a Channel 4 reality show, took part in 2001. He was fired but he had signed a modeling job with Select Model Management. In 2003, he was modelled for Abercrombie & Fitch with Malin kerman. Hugo Boss, and Armani followed him as he modelled for Aquascutum, Hugo Boss, and Armani. In 2005, he became Dior Homme's fragrance public relations star. Natalia Vodianova, a Russian model, appeared in Calvin Klein's first appearance in his advertising campaign in 2004. The jeans advertising campaigns for Kate Moss in 2006 and with Eva Mendes in 2010. He was made the face of Calvin Klein's 'CK Free' fragrance in 2009 and appeared solo in Calvin Klein's underwear campaign. According to the New York Times, he was dubbed "The Golden Torso" in 2006. In Calvin Klein's model hunting competition, he also served as a judge, "Nine countries, nine men, one champion."

Dornan appeared in commercials for Dolce & Gabbana, Zara, Banana Republic, Dior, Calvin Klein, and Levi's Jeans with Lily Aldridge. He was named by GQ in 2006, and by Vogue in 2015, he was named one of the "25 Greatest Male Models of All Time" in the United States. In 2015 and 2016, he was ranked third and 15th on GQ Magazine's best dressed British men list. He was the new star of Hugo Boss' "Boss The Scent" alongside Dutch actress Birgit Kos in 2018. Terry Richardson, Bruce Weber, Guy Aroch, Norman Jean Roy, all worked with respected fashion photographers during his time. Dornan's modeling success was his iconic, trademark appearance, which was branded "Dornan Furrow" by the trade and the media. Despite being regarded as an A-class model, he never took part in ramp walks due to his unusual style of walking.

Acting career

Dornan said that the change to an acting career was not straightforward for him because he was often branded "model turned actor," but that he had always wanted to act and was persistent in proving his acting skills. Dornan's first acting role in a film was as Count Axel Fersen in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette (2006). Dornan also appeared in the Sun's drama film Shadows in 2009, which starred three-time Academy Award nominee Jean Simmons. In 2008, he appeared in the Hammer Horror film Beyond the Rave as the lead role.

Dornan earned praise for his role as the Huntsman/Sheriff Graham in nine episodes of ABC's Once Upon a Time between 2011 and 2013. Although Graham was shot by the town's mayor Regina/the Evil Queen in the episode "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter," Dornan said he would return as the Huntsman from Enchanted Forest at some point. He returned as the Huntsman for the season's "A Land Without Magic" and later as Graham for the season two episode "Welcome to Storybrooke" in its flashback section. "Irish-born Jamie Dornan did an excellent job of portraying Graham's hopelessness and confusion," Laura Prudom of The Huffington Post said of his appearance.

Dornan received critical acclaim as he appeared alongside Gillian Anderson in The Fall, as a serial murderer terrorizing Belfast. Dornan auditioned for the position of a police officer initially, but he was later asked to audition for the lead position, for which he was eventually chosen. The show debuted in 2013 and ended in October 2016. Dornan read books about serial killers and watched Ted Bundy's interviews to get a sense of his character's motivations, as well as stalked a woman in his role preparing for the role. "Jamie Dornan as Paul has been chastised in an appearance that defibritically as a stripper and perhaps more seductively." Dornan was named for the Best Actor in Television by the Irish Film and Television Academy in his first Irish Film and Television Award, and he was nominated for a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor. Dornan was cast as Abe Goffe in New Worlds, a historical drama series.

In the film version of Fifty Shades of Grey, Dornan was cast as Christian Grey, replacing Charlie Hunnam. Initially scheduled to be released on August 1, 2014, the film was later delayed and released on February 13, 2015. Dornan visited a private sex dungeon to prepare for his tragic role. He reprised his role in the second and third installments of the Fifty Shades film franchise, Fifty Shades Darker, released in 2017, and Fifty Shades Freed, a 2018 film. The franchise, which made $1.32 billion, became the seventh highest-grossing R-rated franchise. Despite being a box office blockbust, the trilogy was poorly received by critics, with Dornan's appearance being critically panned. In several interviews, he said he was ill to see such reviews.

Dornan would appear in The 9th Life of Louis Drax, a supernatural thriller based on a book of the same name, on August 27, 2014. It was announced on September 2nd, 2016. Dornan was ranked third in People Magazine's Top Male Alive rankings in November 2014.

In Netflix's historic war film The Siege of Jadotville in 2016, Dornan was cast as Commandant Pat Quinlan. He was taken to a boot camp in South Africa, where the remainder of the cast members were sent to prepare for the film. Mixed critiques were given to the film at the Galway Film Festival 2016 when it was unveiled. Dominic Clarke, a journalist for The Irish Times, lauded Dornan for his suave behavior. He was nominated for best actor in the film's third run for best actor in a leading role in the Irish Film and Television Award. He appeared in another war film Anthropoid last year as Jan Kubi. "Well, Rupert Hawksley of The Daily Telegraph agreed that he made a good fist of portraying Kubis: "Nazi nail biter Anthropoid says Jamie Dornan has many more shades than 50 shades." He was nominated for the British Independent Film Award and the Czech Lion Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film.

Dornan would co-star Peter Dinklage in the HBO television film My Dinner with Hervé in May 2017. The film was shot in June 2017 and was announced on October 20, 2018. "The Danny plot is fine - nothing special," Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe said, although Dornan is a natural performer who has a positive attitude towards an underwritten character.

In the biographical drama A Private War, Dornan portrayed journalist Paul Conroy in 2018. Dornan's result was described as "a gallantly self-effacing effort" by Ann Hornaday, a Washington Post reporter. Dornan's appearance was described as "excellent work from the Fifty Shades veteran," Kenneth Turan of Los Angeles wrote. He appeared in Robin Hood and Untogether as Will Scarlett, a physician and memoirist.

In the science fiction thriller film Synchronic, Dornan starred as a paramedic in 2019. At the 44th Toronto International Film Festival, it had its world premiere, receiving rave feedback from critics.

Dornan made his debut in two comedy films, Wild Mountain Thyme (2020) and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021). He has been lauded for his musical appearance and comedic appearance in Barb and Star. Alonso Duralde wrote about his ballad as "a definite highlight" of the film and said, "While I'm confident [Annie] Mumolo and [Kristen] Wiig's show all the way," Alonso Duralde wrote about him, Dornan is remarkably strong against these two dynamos." The film adaptation of John Patrick Shanley's Outside Mullingar by Wild Mountain Thyme was poorly received, and it was chastised for accent inaccuracy. Nevertheless, Dornan's performance was lauded by The Guardian's Simran Hanson, who described it as "a commendable act of comedic brilliance, not to be missed." Dornan was considered a miscast by some commentators.

In Kenneth Branagh's drama film Belfast, Dornan portrayed a working class father, with the character being based on Branagh's father. "Dornan, the s&m sex trap of the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy, builds on his virtuoso debut on The Fall to portray an actor of ferocity and a quiet confidence as he invests Pa, often missing from home for construction work in England." Peter Travers wrote about the film on Good Morning America. Dornan was nominated for the Golden Globe Award and Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actor for his critically acclaimed appearance. At the 94th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Picture.

He was nominated for his role as the leader of an amnesiac in BBC thriller series The Tourist. On its debut on BBC iPlayer in January 2022, it became the most watched show of that month with the most viewers until then. His character was both challenged by him and critics alike. Lucy Mangan, the Guardian's television critic, lauded him for his "compelling appearance" and found him in "fine form."
