James Michael Tyler (born May 28, 1962) is an American actor best known for his role as Gunther on the NBC sitcom Friends.

Early life

In either Greenwood, Mississippi, or Winona, Mississippi, James Michael Tyler was born on May 28, 1962, the youngest of five children.

When Tyler was ten years old, his dad, a former USAF captain, died. Tyler's mother died just one year later when he was eleven years old. Tyler and his sister moved to Anderson, South Carolina, afterward. Tyler came from T.L. Hanna High School was founded in 1980.

He graduated from Anderson College (now Anderson University) in 1982 with a two-year Associate's degree and then graduated from Clemson University with a degree in geology. During his time in Clemson, he was a member of the Clemson Players, a student theatre company. This experience sparked his aspiration to be an actor. In 1987, he received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia.

Personal life

Tyler married Barbara Chadsey in 1995. The couple married in 2003, but he filed for divorce in 2014, citing irreconcilable inconsistencies. Jennifer Carno was a student at the University of On September 29, he married her.

Career

In 1988, he moved to Los Angeles and became an assistant film editor and production assistant. He was a production assistant on Fat Man and Little Boy the same year. He worked at Guitar Center and the Bourgeois Pig in Los Angeles. Barbara Chadsey, his first wife, who he married in 1995, was here.

On the sitcom Friends, James Michael Tyler played Gunther from 1994 to 2004. Gunther, a Central Perk coffee shop employee, had an unrequited admiration for Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston. His real-life experience as a barista gave an assistant director on Friends the opportunity to place him behind the Central Perk counter to make the set seem more "authentic." He spent ten years on television in 148 of Friends' 236 episodes; he is the show's most recurring character actor.

A hair stylist friend asked if he could bleach bleach on Tyler's hair the night before his first appearance on Friends. Tyler agreed, and the makers of Friendship so much that what should have been a one-off glance ended up becoming part of his character. For ten years, he was forced to bleach his hair every week.

Tyler officially opened the temporary Central Perk pop up replica in London on Friends' 15th anniversary in 2009. Fans of the show were able to purchase a free cup of coffee and see memorabilia from it for two weeks from September to October. He appeared on Unaired Pilot satire sitcom Nobody's Watching, playing himself on the set of Central Perk.

Tyler appeared at a Central Perk replica in SoHo on Friends' 20th anniversary in 2014.

When Matt LeBlanc tries unsuccessfully to convince the other main stars from Friends to appear in the fictional television show Pucks, Tyler appeared in the BBC/Showtime Comedy Episodes (Series 2, Episode 6).

He sponsored the Lili Claire Foundation and AIDS Project Los Angeles charities.
