James Rhodes Life

Born in 1975, James Edward Rhodes (born 6 March 1975) is a British concert pianist and writer.

Early life

In St John's Wood, North London, Edward Rhodes was born into a middle-class Jewish family. He was educated at Arnold House School, a local all-boys independent preparatory kindergarten. He was abused sexually by his PE instructor, who died before he could appear in court. Rhodes suffered from physical and mental disease, including spinal damage, eating disorders, and PTSD.

He discovered a Bach-Busoni Chaccone cassette in his father's music collection at the age of 7. "About all, it made him feel as if the world really was a hostile and appalling place, but it didn't have to be bad because something so beautiful existed in it." He was taught piano but did not progress beyond Grade 3. He began attending Harrow School, where he worked with piano teacher Colin Stone from the age of 13 to 14. He appeared in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in this period, but he was unable to make it to the second round.

In 1993, he was given a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Personal life

Rhodes currently lives in Madrid, Spain, where he has campaigned to reform Spanish legislation on child sexual assault. The Spanish Council of Ministers granted him Spanish citizenship in December 2020.

Rhodes married a novelist in 2001, but the marriage ended in divorce in 2009. In 2014, Rhodes married Hattie Chamberlin, his second wife. In 2021, he married Micaela Breque, his third wife. He has a son from his first marriage.

Rhodes is a close friend of actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who attended Harrow School at the same time as he did.

James Rhodes Career

Career

Rhodes, a fan of Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov, Rhodes, wrote to Sokolov's agent Franco Panozzo in Italy, implying that Rhodes will become a music agent for himself. Panozzo replied, and after Rhodes gave him a bottle of Champagne Krug, the pair arranged to meet in Italy. Panozzo arranged for Rhodes to have a brief tutorage under the renowned piano teacher Edoardo Strabbioli in Verona, Italy, after hearing Rhodes play. However, Rhodes was institutionalized after a period of time.

Rhodes became the first central classical pianist to be signed with Warner Bros. Records in March 2010. Rhodes made a regular culture blogger for The Telegraph in 2011 and had a number of popular articles in The Guardian Music Blog in 2013. Rhodes' 4th album JIMMY: James Rhodes appeared live at The Old Market Brighton in May 2012. Since being released three more albums, he hasn't disappointed. Instrumental: A Memoir of Madness, Medication, and Music, Rhodes' autobiography, 2015, was barred from publication due to a provisional court injunction prompted by his former wife. Publishing the book, which includes details of sexual abuse as a child, would psychologically harm their child, according to her. In Rhodes vs. OPO, the Supreme Court ruled that the book qualifies for free speech protection, which was reversed by the Supreme Court in May 2015, lifting the interim injunction.

Since then, he has published three more books: How to Play the Piano in 2016 and Fire on Both Sides in January 2018. In October 2019, 'James Rhodes' Playlist: The Rebels and Revolutionaries of Sound' was followed by 'James Rhodes' Playlist: The Rebels and Revolutionaries of Sound.'

Rhodes also appeared in Barbados at the Holders Season 2010 in March 2010. He was the first solo classical pianist to appear on the Latitude Festival in summer 2010, as well as acts like Florence + the Machine and The National.

Stephen Fry appeared in A Classical Affair at the Barbican Centre in September 2011. He toured around Germany, including the Berlin Philharmonie and a lengthy tour of Spain in 2019.

To celebrate Frédéric Chopin's 200th birthday and his friendship with opera singer Jenny Lind, Rhodes shot Chopin - The Women Behind The Music, a BBC Four music documentary. In October 2010, this documentary was first broadcast. James Rhodes: Piano Man was filmed in Rhodes, a seven-episode series.

In July 2013, he hosted Notes from the Inside with James Rhodes on Channel 4 as part of their Mad4Music collection of shows, in which each episode featured musicians from around the musical spectrum, giving an alternative perspective on music and what it means to them and others around it; for example, in the second episode featured Björk being interviewed by Sir David Attenborough. During his talk, he shared some insights into his personal life and played piano to four people, all dealing with their own mental health problems, inside their psychiatric hospital by selecting a piece for each of them to fit their personalities and individual circumstances.

Rhodes produced Don't Stop the Music, a two-part campaigning series that premiered on Channel 4 in September 2014 with the intention of improving music education in the United Kingdom. The multiplatform scheme included an instrument amnesty that collected over 7,000 instruments (worth over £1.5 million) to redistribute to 150 UK primary schools, benefiting 10,000 students a year.
