James Morrison Life

Born on August 13th, 1984, James Morrison Catchpole (born 13 August 1984) is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Rugby, Warwickshire.

"You Give Me Something" was a hit in Europe, Australia, Japan, and Iran in 2006, peaking in the top five in the UK and claiming the No. 1 position in New Zealand.

Undiscovered, his debut album, debuted at the top of the UK Albums Chart.

Morrison received the British Male Award in 2007 for his second album, Songs for You, Truths for Me, which debuted in the top five in the United Kingdom and also topped the Irish Albums Chart.

"You Make It Real" and his critically acclaimed collaboration with Nelly Furtado entitled "Broken Strings" were featured in "Today Is True" and Truths for Me.

Catchpole has written for other artists, including Demi Lovato, Olly Murs, Kelly Clarkson, and Clay Aiken – He wrote "Quello che dai" for Italian singer Marco Carta, which debuted at number one in Italy's official charts in 2010.

Early life

Morrison was born in Rugby, Warwickshire, where he was surrounded by the esteem of his parents' record collection; his mother was a fan of soul; and his father loved folk and country. When his uncle Joe showed him how to play a blues riff, he began playing guitar. When he was a boy in Porth, Newquay, Cornwall, in a local pub called the Phoenix, Watergate Bay, he started busking. On the promenade looking over Porth's beach, he used to practice playing his guitar. At Treviglas Community College, he studied GCSE music. He began to write his own after several years of reporting other musicians' songs. He traces his distinct sound to a severe bout of whooping cough that nearly killed him as a child.

Morrison also referred to an unhappy childhood wrought by poverty and illness; "the best thing is I've got memories of being a kid there," he said of his hometown. Morrison was only a few weeks old when he developed whooping cough and was given a 30 percent chance of surviving from doctors, who believed that if he survived, he would be seriously brain damaged. "I went blue and stopped breathing, and [doctors] had to resuscitate me four times," he says. His parents divorced when he was four years old, and he suffered from low self-confidence at school, where he was shunned for being interested in music rather than sports. He finally gained confidence when he migrated to Cornwall as an adult, where people were more accepting of his musical interests.

Morrison said he was inspired by music from a young age, listening to artists including Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Van Morrison, and Al Green. Morrison said he was nearly dead when he heard Stevie Wonder's voice for the first time and he has been fascinated by his voice.

Morrison discovered Ryan's Bar & Scream, an Irish bar, which also hosts an open mic night on Wednesdays and Sundays. Bennett Wilson and Morrison became acquainted with Kevin Andrews, who made Morrison's first demo tape and co-wrote "One Last Chance," which was later re-recorded and appeared on his debut studio album, Undiscovered. Polydor Records eventually picked up his demos.
