James Haven Voight (born May 11, 1973) is an American actor and producer.
He is the son of actor Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, as well as actress Angelina Jolie's older brother.
Early life
Haven was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 11, 1973, to actress Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. Angelina Jolie, his younger sister, is a child actress who has performed on stage. Their uncles, Chip Taylor, and volcanologist Barry Voight, are among the singer-songwriters and volcanologists. Haven is of German and Slovak descent, and he is of French-Canadian, Dutch, Polish, and German descent on his mother's side. Despite Bertrand's assertion that she had Iroquois ancestry, Voight said Bertrand was "not seriously Iroquois" and a Huron woman born in 1649 is her only known Native American ancestor.
Haven and his sister were raised by their mother after his parents' divorce in 1976. She and them migrated to Palisades, New York, after giving up acting. A decade later, when Haven was 13 years old, the family moved to Los Angeles, where he attended Beverly Hills High School. Following graduation, he joined the USC School of Cinema-Television. He received a George Lucas Award for a student film starring his sister while at the University of Southern California.
Personal life
Haven was estranged from their father for many years, with the exception of "Voight" being his surname. After a six-year absence, he reconciled with his father after his mother's death from ovarian cancer on January 27, 2007. Haven converted to Christ in 2009.
Career
Haven began his career as a comedian in 1998. He appeared in several films starring his sister, Angelina Jolie, including Gia (1998), Hell's Kitchen (1998), and Original Sin (2001). Billy Bob Thornton, his sister's then-husband, appeared in Monster's Ball (2001), which also starred him in Monster's Ball (2001). In a 2004 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigations and a 2007 episode of The Game, he appeared.
Haven was the executive producer of the film Trudell, which chronicles the life and times of Santee Sioux musician and activist John Trudell in 2005. Trudell was a official selection at the Sundance Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival; it received the Special Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival. He appeared as executive producer to the short film That's Our Mary, which follows two actresses who are waiting for the final casting decision for the role of the Virgin Mary in a faith-based film studio in 2011.
Haven has been the executive board director of Artivist, a Los Angeles festival that showcases films addressing human rights, animal rights, and environmental issues since 2006.
