James Dominic Frain (born 14 March 1968) is an English stage and film actor.

Thomas Cromwell's best known roles include those as Ferdinand in Orphanage Black (2015), Theo Galavan/Azrael in Season 2 of Gotham, as William, 16th Earl of Warwick (1997), as Ferdinand, as King of Warwick, as King Richard Neville in Season 2 of HBO drama True Blood (2014) as Ferdinand in Spartacus, as Ferdinand in Orphanage. (2017). Frain appeared in the BBC drama Armadillo (2001), The Buccaneers (1995) and The Mill on the Floss (1997), as well as the films Hilary and Jackie (1998) and Elizabeth (1998).

In Titus, he appeared as Chief Magistrate Gérard de Villefort.

Early life

Frain was born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, and grew up in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex, England, the eldest of eight children of a teacher mother and a stockbroker father. He was educated at Newport Free Grammar School, studied Drama and Film at the University of East Anglia, and trained as an actor at London's Central School of Speech and Drama.

Personal life

Frain married director Marta Cunningham in 2004; the couple has two children.

Career

After being spotted by Richard Attenborough in his last year of drama school, he made his film debut in Shadowlands (1993). He was nominated for Best Actor at the 1995 Venice Film Festival for his role as a Northern Irish terrorist in Thaddeus O'Sullivan's film "Life Personal (1995), and for Best Support Actor at the Genies in Toronto for his role in István Szabó's Sunshine (1999).

He has appeared onstage in the United Kingdom, with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal Court Theatre, as well as on the West End. He has appeared on Broadway and has received the 2008 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performances as a member of The Homecoming (2007) cast member Karen Kelly.

He has appeared in a number of television shows, including Soldier Soldier (1993), Armadillo (2001), Invasion (2006), and The Closer (2006). Thomas Cromwell in Showtime's The Tudors; the villainous billionaire 'Chess' in NBC's superhero/crime drama series The Cape; and vampire Franklin Mott in HBO's True Blood. Frain appeared on Grimm's season 2 as a cryptic recurring character named Eric Renard.

Azrael appeared in the second season of Gotham as Azrael. On Star Trek: Discovery, the second prequel TV series in the Star Trek franchise, he currently portrays Sarek, Spock's father.
