Life and career

Ehnes was born in Brandon, Manitoba, the son of Alan Ehnes, a long-serving trumpet professor at Brandon University (Canada), and Barbara Withey Ehnes, a former ballerina with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Ruth Page's International Ballet, and Chicago Ballet, former Brandon School of Dance director. Ehnes began his violin studies at the age of four and became a protégé of Canadian violinist Francis Chaplin at the age of nine. He studied with Sally Thomas at The Meadowmount School of Music from 1993 to 1997, winning the Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music at his graduation.

During the 1992-1993 season, James Ehnes appeared on Jeunes MusicalesCanada, when he was just 16 years old.

He received a Doctor of Music degree (honoris causa) from Brandon University in October 2005, and in July 2007, he became Canada's youngest individual to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2010.

Ehnes focuses on the 1715 Stradivarius, "ex-Marsick" Stradivarius. His commercial recordings have received numerous accolades and honors, including 11 Junos, two Grammies, and two Gramophone Classical Music Awards – 2008 Best Concerto for Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto - 2021 Artist of the Year.

In the Instrumentalist category, Ehnes was named by the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards in 2017. In 2017, Ehnes was named visiting professor of violin by the Royal Academy of Music.

Ehnes is the Artistic Director of the Seattle Chamber Music Society. The Ehnes Quartet's members, violinist Richard O'Neill, cellist Richard O'Neill, and cellist Edward Arron appear alongside.
