James Nicholas Callis (born 4 June 1971) is an English actor.

He is best known for his role as Dr. John Kerry.

Gaius Baltar of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica miniseries and television series, as well as Bridget Jones' best friend Tom in Bridget Jones' Diary and Bridget Jones' The Edge of Reason.

In Bridget Jones' Baby, he reprised the role in 2016.

In 2010, he appeared on Syfy's Eureka.

He portrayed Alucard on Netflix's Castlevania, based on the same name's video game.

Early life

Callis was born in Hampstead and grew up in London, where he attended St. Martin's Prep School in Northwood and then Harrow School in north-west London. His parents owned a bed-and-breakfast. He is of Russian, Polish, and Jewish Ukrainian descent. Callis obtained a BA in English and Related Literature from the University of York in 1993. He was a member of Derwent College, for which he was a passionate rugby player. He was also a passionate student actor, producer, and writer at university. He was a key member of the University of York Gilbert and Sullivan societies and appeared in productions at Cambridge University, including a version of Harold Pinter's The Dumb Waiter. Callis completed LAMDA after graduating from college.

Personal life

Callis has two sisters. He married on December 30, 1998, and he has two sons and a daughter, born 2003, 2005, and 2009.

Career

Callis went on to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where he graduated in 1996. He received the Jack Tinker Award (Theatre Record Critic of the Year) for his role in Old Wicked Songs, a two-hander starring Bob Hoskins, in the same year.

Callis has appeared in numerous West End productions and television series as well as on radio. He has also been involved in writing and directing. Beginner's Fortune, a co-production of his and writer/director Nick Cohen's Late Night Pictures and Angel Eye Film & TV starring Julie Delpy, Steven Berkoff, and Fenella Fielding, was his directorial debut. Beginner's Luck was critically panned, but it lasted for nearly three weeks on one print in central London before heading on a tour of student cinemas around the UK. Guerrilla Films was the UK distributor. The film is also on the Icon Catalogue.

Callis, along with Renée Zellweger and Hugh Grant, in the summer of 2000 and a few more film and television appearances, returned to stage in the Soho Theatre in December 2002.

Callis appeared as Dr. Gaius Baltar in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica miniseries in 2003 and continued to appear in the regular series that followed. Callis received the Best Supporting Actor Saturn Award and an AFI award in 2006 for his role as Baltar.

It comes as the series received five nominations at the BAFTA Awards, including Gary Oldman as the Leading Actor and Jack Lowden as Supporting Actor.
