Career
Jamil said in an NPR interview that she was working as a teacher when she was discovered by a bar owner and asked to audition as a host. After seeing a T4 (the first slot of Britain's free-to-air Channel 4) job ad, she applied to be a host via email. Jamil appeared on Music Zone, Channel Four's youth channel, towards the end of 2008. In 2009, she began presenting at Channel 4's youth slot T4 in 2009. Jamil took over as co-host alongside Nick Grimshaw in January 2009, after former host Alexa Chung left the morning TV show Freshly Squeezed. Jamil hosted The Closet, an online fashion guide on Bebo's social networking website, which was launched by Twenty Twenty Twenty Twenty Twenty (20).
Jamil began as an event DJ in 2010. She has said that her first appearance was at Elton John's birthday party, where she claims she was invited to DJ because she had no prior experience. She claimed in subsequent interviews and on social media that she worked as a DJ for eight years after learning about music for six years on a music scholarship.
She wrote a column for Company, the women's monthly magazine, from 2011 to 2014. Jamil was fired by June Sarpong in January 2012 as the show's host, in which a group of gay men lie about their sexuality and vie with a group of straight guys for a woman's affections in order to win money. Jamil left London in 2016 and moved to Los Angeles. She claims she had no intentions of acting and that instead she wanted to work as a screenwriter. Michael Schur, who co-created Parks and Recreation, was looking for a British celebrity for a new upcoming comedy film, she told her. She had no prior acting experience at the time, so she went to the audition and told the casting director that she had some stage acting experience. She was later asked for a second interview with Mike Schur and all of the creators, in which she said she had comedies improvv experience. She was eventually given the role.
Jamil appeared in the premiere of the NBC fantasy comedy series The Good Place in September 2016, where she played Tahani Al-Jamil. The name drop has been a trademark of Jamil's character.
