Personal life

Early life and high school career
Smith was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Charles and Orletha Smith. Kiara Smith is his sister. Smith played for Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, Maryland, where he averaged 22.2 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game as a senior and received several accolades, among them, the Gatorade Maryland Boys Basketball Player of the Year twice. He was selected to the All-American team of McDonald's 2018.
Rivals, 247Sports, and ESPN ranked Smith as one of the top 25 recruiters in the 2018 recruiting class. All three scouting firms also rated him as one of the best candidates at his position.
College career
After verbally committing in June, Smith signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Maryland on November 8, 2017. He preferred Maryland over Villanova and Virginia for example. He averaged 11.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game as a freshman. In a 79–77 victory over Belmont in the Round of 64 of the NCAA Tournament, he had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Smith had 15 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high five blocks in the next game, a 69-67 loss to LSU.
Smith led to a 72-51 victory over Notre Dame on December 4, 2019. He had 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Smith scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a come-from-behind 77-66 victory over Northwestern on January 21, 2020. Smith was named by the coaches, radio, and the Defensive Team at the end of the regular season. The Associated Press and Sporting News named him Third Team All-American. As a sophomore, he played 15.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game. Smith declared for the 2020 NBA draft after the season.
Professional career
Smith was selected by the Phoenix Suns as the 10th pick of the first round of the 2020 NBA draft. The Phoenix Suns announced on November 24, 2020, that they had signed Smith. The Suns assigned Smith to the Aventur Clippers of the NBA G League on February 15, 2021, owing to the team's popularity and after appearing in only eight games. Smith was recalled by the Suns on February 26, 2021. Smith finished his rookie season by making the NBA Finals, but the Suns were defeated in 6 games by the Milwaukee Bucks.
Smith was traded to the Indiana Pacers in 2022 as part of Tory Craig's future second-round draft pick. Smith re-signed with the Pacers on a two-year contract worth $9.6 million dollars on July 1, 2022.
